Porter brings in a pair of heroes long overdue to catch up with Jor-El. The conversation with Batman leaves this Superman disappointed there isn’t common ground for the vision laid out for Earth. This all comes on the heels of great action as the dynamic duo thrive in the opening pages. Seeing the heroes work in unison makes Batman’s words all the more painful. His reasoning makes sense but doesn’t help Jor-El, who needs a win in this moment of time.
After this meeting, the story splits into a tale of two directions. The first focuses on Luthor’s question of magical supremacy. Watching Constantine absorb the responsibilities for the Dead leads him into a redemption (of sorts). It plays well off the other characters involved. The other becomes more complicated. Jor-El’s pleas to government leads to an explosive encounter with the WildC.A.T.S. Readers see how quickly things fall apart in this period. This becomes more personal with a few revelations by Lois Lane. All roads lead to a furious ending, with one shocking all involved. There’s a lot of good things to process here.

Earls and Filardi welcome Batman and Robin in with epic fashion. The half page shot kickstarts a frantic scene with Scarecrow. Once Jor-El jumps into frame, the fight is wrapped up fairly quickly. Another great half panel shot shows the trio conversing over the future. As the talk of what’s next leads into the past, the full shot of Bruce’s parents fateful night is presented with a fresh take via the coloring under marquee lights. It’s a great transition piece to let Luthor’s time take hold.
The reactions inside the Oblivion Bar speak volumes as Luthor’s gambit is out of control. His brawl with Dr. Fate leads into a striking half panel image. This ushers events back to Jor-El’s plea with government. Once the trap is laid, the art dials back in on the action. Readers watch as the C..A.T.S. go into attack mode. A loud half panels showcases them bringing the fight. This leads into more huge action panels. Once the story dives into the close, the images reflect the major changes in play. None bolder than the last page. The full shot of one character mic drops events as the end looks near for one.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Jor-El looks for help in an old friend while his enemies cement their plans to strike. Porter structures Jor-El’s latest rounds with many combustible elements. Earls and Filardi dive into the heavy weight involved with the Father of Tomorrow. A visionary take on the Superman Mythos continues with thunderous success!
