SUPERMAN #41 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows,Eber Ferreira, Ulises Arreola&Ariana Maher (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Williamson raises the stakes with his involvement in the crossover. After the usual opening of Zod’s old footage, the current times are filled with doubt. The writing adds a true sense of despair with each action taken. Superman and Zod are staged to fight in their respective armors. It is a wild notion to see them guarded up. This adds more gravity to the worldwide Kyrptonite plague spreading worldwide.
Readers don’t have time to worry about that. The majority of this issue is all action. Zod’s ruthlessness tactics present a deadly threat all its’ own. This grows deeper with the dialogue. Hearing the fury and rage in his voice, Zod’s drive becomes unstoppable. The fallout primes readers for the shocking closing moments of the issue. Just when you think the set-up is there, Williamson hits the brakes and reverse engineers plans. It results in a more storng finish with doors wide open for what’s next. A much needed shot of excitement for this chaotic crossover.

The art team gift fans more action than expected with this chapter. After the intro, a phenomenal two page spread sets the mood for the heavyweight bout. Lois and Tomorrow Man’s reactions show the drive to fight back. It mirrors Clark’s unbreakable will. An intense none panel grid stages a brutal strike few could walk away from. Readers watch as a chilling full page image shows the lengths Zod will go to survive.
The blow serves as a pivot point for the resolution. A great half panel concludes the fight for now. This allows Zod to refocus his attention. Few can expect what happens next. A major victory (via half page) ushers in a wild twist of the story. No one is ready for this full page moment. Zod’s reactions made this all more priceless as what happens becomes reality. It shakes events up heading into the closing stages. Once here, a volatile final page changes gears as the fight ofr the Kingdom continues!
FINAL GRADE: 9
Zod’s victorious ways are upended by a twist you won’t see coming in a magnificent crossover chapter. Williamson reshuffles the deck with a strong script. The art team gives the action a bold look with sensational sequences. Buckle in for where this story heads from here!
