SUPERMAN #37 (DC COMICS)

Superboy-Prime is finding out there’s more to being a “hero” than just punching the bad guys.

His role in Metropolis has led him into finding a secret identity & new life. Success with this role is not without some issues. Primarily no hero in the DCU wants to give him a chance to redeem himself.

The issue with popularity leads him to an unlikely source for advice: Damian Wayne!

SUPERMAN #37 by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher sees one of the most improbable team-ups in recent memory go down.

Let’s take a closer look at what happens now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes this story into a few different ventures as Prime deals with his reputation. The recap with the Kents provides some humor and awkward moments. Knowing a tea of Justice Leaguers are hovering outside the farm brings that component to the forefront. It allows some key 4th wall breaking to occur. You can tell Williamson is loving to use the method in the story. There are a multitude of excellent one-liner s sprinkled in the script.

Once his journey takes him to Gotham City, the exchange with Damian is flawlessly delivered. Readers watch as the young Robin executes his brash delivery to Prime’s lackluster questions. This spills into a conflict with a Bat rogue. The writing isn’t afraid to inject more laughs in this scenario. It plays up to Prime’s strengths. Once events wind down, they conclude on a more grounded note. The closing pages blend in a few more classic themes before the last image eludes to something more sinister. A fun read while seeing the glimpses of redemption peek through.

Mora and Sánchez open with a few shots of what he’s been up to. It leads to a wholesome image of the Kent family laughing over breakfast. Immediately after that, the images turn uncomfortable as Prime talks with no filter. It is a hilarious moment watching the Kents pause hearing Prime’s depiction of the internet fans (and Mark Waid’s) opinions. This leads into a full shot of the JLU hovering overhead. Considering his past, this is a good course of action.

Prime’s next move takes him to the gritty streets of Gotham. Damian’s “welcome” gets a near full page to extend the greeting. Readers watch as the pair get caught up in a great action sequence with their villain. One of the dirtiest plays happens when a full page shot of Superman appears in scene. Fans watch as the conflict ends with many heroic shots. It gives way to a haunting premonition piece before the close. Once here, loose threads are tied but one gets the final full page. It’s an image that sets a dangerous course for next chapter. Excellent work.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Superboy-Prime and Damian Wayne have a discussion about popularity in this fantastic new chapter Williamson dishes out the one-liners as Prime’s redemption tour is in full swing. Mora and Sanchez deliver on incredible art. It’ Prime’s world and hopefully the DCU survives it!
