JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #24 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Dan Mora, Fico Ossio, Tamra Bonvillain, Matt Herms & Ariana Maher (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid puts the most unlikely hero into a scenario that he may become the DCU’s biggest villain. Ray Palmer’s actions during and after DC K.O. have been questionable at best. His belief they are justified makes him all the more stronger of a villain. The hearing with Batman, Wonder Woman and Hawkman shows his defiance in the face of danger. The mission in Qurac is filled with great League action. What’s discovered along the way proves to be the focal point for the friction amongst members.

Readers watch as Palmer’s theories appear to be coming true. After the crisis is averted, the writing shows the intensity of the hearing. Batman’s accusations strike a nerve with Palmer. their exchange is very heated with Palmer selling his case. It is a very fresh take on the hero as he refuses to back down. This leads into a strong cliffhanger ending while stirring up more uncertainty amongst the “heroes.” A great showing of a possible villain origin story.

Mora and Bonvillain piece together high drama amongst phenomenal action sequences. The opening full shot is perfect, with the League in shadows hovering over Palmer. This moves events to the incident in Qurac. A bold full page brings the League in swinging. It is non stop action from this stage. Readers watch as panels are exploding off the pages. It builds to a shocking entrance form Atom which ruffles Batman’s patience. As events go back to the hearing, Palmer’s anger can’t be denied as he is grilled for his betrayal. Even some members of the league can’t look at him in the eye for this. Small panels amplify this heading into the cliffhanger finish.

Maines, Ossio, Herms and Maher close the show with Dreamer in “The Path Forward”. Dreamer winds up learning more than bargained for when a visitor from the Absolute universe pays a visit. The writing plays out the dark future coming and what role Dreamer can play in stopping it. This builds off of recent appearances to bring the hero back into the JL good graces. Ossio and Herms lock in on the emotional tugs as tough choices need to be made. An excellent full page closes up shop for now but curious to where this arc leads next.

FINAL GRADE: 9

In the wake of the Amnesty program, Ray Palmer stands tall. Waid brings out a fiery side of the small hero with sharp dialogue. Mora and Bonvillain bring the energy in incredible action sequences. The definition of a hero is compromised as Darkseid’s looming threat shatters the League once again!
