Pires swings for the fences and connects for a monster win here. The premise is as advertised. After a heart-wrenching opening with Wolf’s origin, the story shows how this all came to be. Once events fast forward to present time, the brick is thrown on the gas pedal and never taken off. Chromedome and the Goo Gang make a bold statement to the readers. If anyone is thinking this is “Saturday Morning safe”, think again.
Readers watch as the Mutts enter the fray with no effs given. There is plenty of wild violence and big guns on display. The writing carries a certain grittiness needed to establish the foursome. Readers watch as there are some homages to some other animalistic heroes. This offsets the brutal violence of the story. Chromedome is as unpredictable as any villain gets. His dialogue is sharp in delivery. As events push to the final act, Pires revs up more violence while dashing in some surprises, It leads to an interesting finish with many more miles to go.

Gedeon and the team fully get & excel at the assignment here. After a more wholesome start, it’s nothing but crazy action moving forward. Panels have no issues with heads exploding, crazy gunfights, and more debauchery. This comes off the heels of the origin pages. A full shot of the crash into downtown LA shows the canine crusaders heading into the unknown. They emerge ready to go via an impressive two page spread shot.
Between the action, the quieter moments allow the audience to catch their breath. McKenna’s investigation shows how the Mutts are affecting the public. Chromedome’s after hours meeting shows his lack of patience and failure. Even the political rally serves as a small breather before the bullets start flying. Readers watch how this event spirals out of manageable hands. It also gifts the story with an incredible shot of a certain automobile that needs to be seen. Once the close happens, panels reflect on more danger following. No better way to go out than leave the audience wanting more!

With a title like this, you know the story has to crank the volume to 11. That is exactly what you get here. Pires orchestrates chaotic magic within these pages, Gedeon and the team deliver wild visuals fitting for the brutal unknown this series brings. Wear a mouthguard while reading cause this one packs a punch!
