STORY OVERVIEW:
Storm thinks back on a battle she had with the Thunder God Susanoo, her victory came with a cost, but at least she saved the day. Fast forward to present day and Storm is summoned to Rage, The Rogue Planet. This is a living Planet that Susanoo has hijacked and put on a collision course with Earth. That is unless Ororo is willing to help him get his honor back through being his Kaishakunin. However, this is against her moral standings, so she tricks him with a tea ceremony to posion him and take him into custody. This act angers his sister, who is also a God, and this causes her to take it out on the Earth. If Ororo does not free Susanoo, Amaterasu will destroy a different city on Earth every five days. After the initial attack, Ororo questions herself and her abilities.
WRITING:
This first issue not only sets up the series but also shows this series will be a very emotional one. Murewa Ayodele really captures the human and emotional side of Storm. She may be a God, but she has always had deep feelings and cares about everyone equally. This issue really shows that soft and caring side. However, Ayodele also shows the power of the God that is Ororo as well. Some great violent fights and the elimination of enemies without prejudice show off her powers and abilities. This series is set up to be a dramatic ride, well still delivering some awesome action.
The threat that the main antagonist presents is only rivaled by the powers of Storm. The fact that Amaterasu gets the best of Storm in this first issue sets up what kind of challenge Ororo is up against. Making the threat feel real even when the hero is a God goes a long way to keep the interest of readers as the series goes on.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this book is stunning and captures the world the story has created perfectly. Federica Mancin brings the world alive with beautiful artwork and leaves nothing to the imagination. Mancin uses what appears to be Japanese art inspirations which makes every part of the story look beautiful. Even the fight sequences have beauty to them which is a real credit to the artist. But Mancin has an amazing partner in the colorist Java Tartaglia. Tartaglia’s color choices completely compliment the artwork and really draw the readers’ eye to the art.
