NOVA: CENTURION #4 by Jed MacKay, Matteo Della Fonte, Mattia Iacono & Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
MacKay sets up the next case with a bit of charm in the dialogue. The addition of Cammi and Aalbort has given Rider a good sounding board for his dilemma. Readers watch as the struggle to refuel starts taking its’ toll. Rider’s dialogue is sharp and filled with frustration. Even when Aalbort has to calm him, there’s no escape on his fading hope. Luckily, things swing in his favor to get started on what’s next.
Eden Rixlo serves as a fun antagonist for this issue. His theft of the wrong ship leads into some wild space hijinx. Readers will be entertained with the space chase. The writing brings out the best of Rider’s heroics in this phase. There’s plenty of space action to keep glued in for. Many usual space pirate themes fill the pages as well. It all comes to a head with a more surprising final page. An old friend stops by. To how this encounter goes provides a solid cliffhanger to next round.

Della Fonte & Iacono give Rider and crew a fun look at their escapades. The introduction of Eden Rixlo hints at more deception to come. This segways into Rider’s refueling drama. Panels fill with his visible anger toward the issue. Aalbort’s stone cold response is priceless in dealing with the antics. The panels provide some subtle comedy as Rider puts himself through an ordeal. This builds towards a solid full page image of the completed task.
Once Rixlo does his work, the story kicks into hyperspace. The high pace action moves without missing a beat. Rider’s skills are on full display. Readers watch the build towards dealing with mines lead to a cheerful half panel look. Once the action slows down, the personalities start coming out on the pages. Rixlo’s fallout teases some more comedic moments. This all gets overshadowed by the last page. The full shot of the guest star drops the mic on a fun-filled ride. Onto the next round
FINAL GRADE: 8
A simple refueling turns into high space drama as Nova must protect his ship. MacKay’s writing hits its’ fair share of comedic notes in-between action. The art team soars when the action takes off in space. Judging by the last page, there’s gonna be a lot of people curious what happens next. Check it out!
