STORY OVERVIEW:

After being left to their own devices, humans have lost all hope. Nowhere is this more noticeable than in the Bowery. The people here once had faith in the guardian known as Spawn. But now Spawn is believed dead and the people have lost their faith. News reporter Sia Sesanga is doing a story on Spawn and his possible death. One of the people she talks to is Miles, who has an interesting past with Spawn. Months earlier his brother Mingus had a run in with Spawn and Miles witnessed the whole thing. Miles then started hunting down Spawn in an effort to get revenge. However, when he finally finds Spawn, his life is changed forever.

WRITING:

This is the first issue of Spawn with the new creative team onboard. Matthew Rosenberg introduces this new world he is creating in the Spawn Universe. This world has a lot of despair and feels hopeless. Rosenberg does an incredible job explaining to us how the world has fallen into this and how they see no end in sight. This leads to some horrific actions taken by some characters in this issue, especially Mingus. After that disturbing scene, Rosenberg uses it to spark what is driving Miles. The focus on Miles is what will be driving the story as this arc moves forward. Rosenberg is very vague with the Miles character which is what will surely build suspense and anticipation for where future issues will go.

ARTWORK:

With a new arc, comes a new art team as well. The art team is anchored by Stephen Segovia who brings a new style and vibe to the franchise. The artwork has a more realistic cartoon style and feels like an animated movie. Segovia shows how run down the world is and the hopelessness of the people in it. Even though the artwork has an animated movie feel, Segovia doesn’t shy away from the violence and more graphic scenes. It gets deep and disturbing at times and is sure to make readers feel a little uneasy. The colors make the artwork pop and really bring out the detail in the artwork. Robert Nugent’s color scheme is spot on and is a perfect complement to Segovia’s art.

Final Thoughts:

Spawn #376 jump starts this new story arc with the new creative team at the helm. This issue feels a little different than the issues that came before it. This new feeling is exciting and opens up way more possibilities on where this series can go. If you have fallen off the Spawn series, this is a perfect time to jump back in and start fresh with this run. You won’t want to miss this one as it promises to be one of the most original arcs we’ve had in this universe.
