*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Simone (with additional script from McFarlane) present an emotionally driven finale to Jessica’s turmoil. Deacon Forrester and his minions have been ruthless in their blind quest. Their dialogue is jagged as they converse on plans. A far cry from Jessica and Young Al. Even in their awkward moments, the bond between both grows stronger by panel. One curious question unlocks more blocked memories for Priest. Behind the tough exterior lies a heart trying to heal itself.
Readers watch as the confrontation with her mother unloads on some of the pent-up frustration she went through. This is a powerful piece that opens the audience’s eyes some of the painful times of Jessica’s youth. It hits the marks needed and refocusing Jessica to the task at hand. Once here, their trek to Al’s mother becomes more complicated than expected. The writing cashes in on raising the stakes with some twist thrown into play involving Forrester. This allows for the aftermath to begin a small portion of healing. Jessica’s time with silencing ghosts of her past makes the ending all more bittersweet. Forgiveness is a tough weight to care, esp when its’ on your own shoulders. It makes for a superb finish to an ever-changing journey.
Guara and Nugent lock in on the build towards the major showdown early in this book. The cult’s arrival comes off with a self-righteous feel as they sense the upper hand is theirs. This moves events to Jessica and Young Al making their journey to see Jessica’s mom. A loud full page image shows why it’s never good form to mess with someone’s motorcycle. This begins a series of intense looks at Jessica’s young past. Panels reflect the pain she went through with deep emotions behind it. It leads to a more complicated chat at the park. Jessica’s feeling start creeping out to make a bold proclamation before heading to the final destination.
The rendezvous at the Simmons house becomes unstable as more guests arrive. Readers watch the set-up take form as a half panel lights the match, ready to make this fight explode. This spills over to fast action, none for the faint of heart. There are no pulled punches here. Events wrap in this portion in a more calm state with a few noteworthy panels. This allows the epilogue to have more gravity to it. Jessica’s last conversation allows more healing to take hold. It leads to a final panel with much promise behind, closing off a very engaging tale.
FINAL GRADE: 9.4
The end is here for Jessica Priest in a highly emotional last stand. Simone opens many of Jessica’s deep scars to fuel a strong finale. Guara and Nugent construct impressive images to guide the readers through the heavy drama. A superb tale of redemption and self-discovery that readers shouldn’t miss checking out!
