*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Simone dives further into the unique dynamic between Jessica and young Al. This shiens when they are pulled over by a disrespectful cop. Their dialogue is short and crass. Perfect for the rude comments being made. Once Jessica has heard enough, she takes matters in her own hands. It serves as the start of a bonding moment as the pair continues their trek. Their conversation takes another turn once they get to a rest area.
Readers get some answers pertaining to why Jessica is paired with young Al. The reveal is cleaver as it’s presented in such a devious way. This works to apply more pressure for Jessica to work through. Once events calm down, her talk with Al breaks away from any mission and allows them to have a moment of normalcy. The writing locks in on some fun time-displaced areas before ramping back into danger. This builds into an explosive final act. Jessica’s grasp of the situation takes a fast detour into the unknown. Judging by the closing panel, any change of keeping her word might have went up in flames.
Guara and Nugent keep events grounded when possible between Jessica and Young Al. The opening pages show the breaking down their escape until its’ interrupted. The use of a nine panel page allows for Jessica to take over the scene. An excellent full page image shows She-Spawn ready for the new threat. Once dealt with, the pair stumbles across an oasis of sorts. A full page image of a mall form yesteryear cements how unexpected this trek has become.
A haunting half panel shows the newest threat emerge. This serves as a solid pivoting point to Jessica getting some much needed answers. Readers see the true reveal of one character take hold of the spotlight. The half panel is dynamic in delivery. It allows the story to come back down to a casual level. The talk with Jessica and young Al covers a few different emotions. One of which allows for a wrinkle of happiness to peak through. While fleeting, it does its’ job in setting up the close. The art brings forth some action while teasing more. This leads to a steady final page with much concerning taking Jesscia’s attention away. Solid work on display here.
FINAL GRADE: 8.7
More secrets revealed as Jessica and young Al keep running out of harm’s path. Simone allows for Priest to showcase a few different looks while the chaos is ensuing. Guara and Nugent delve into the unique pairing with fantastic imagery. This is definitely not your average Spawn story (and we’re here for that!)
