STORY OVERVIEW:
The Wahng brothers wake up beaten up after their run in with Knag and the Bloody Cocks Gang. They need to steal the Hammer of Sepphoris which happens to be at the church Father Park is in charge of. He has been so nice to the brothers, specifically Paul, but Minah’s safety means more to him. Castor could care less and only agrees to go because his brother insists. Once at the church the brothers try to use their telekinetic powers to get the safe combination from Father Park. But what can go wrong does, and before it’s all said and done the brothers pay some pretty heavy consequences.
WRITING:
This issue continues to follow the telekinetic brothers as they keep getting themselves more in trouble. Derek Kirk Kim keeps piling on the problems for the Wahng brothers. Every time you think it can’t get worse for them, another problem gets piled on. This issue does feel like it bogs down a bit and almost feels like it’s going to end up being kind of a dud. However, when the end of the issue comes it picks up and ends with some crazy stuff going on including a great cliffhanger. Kim lulls the reader a bit before hitting us with some really exciting stuff to lead us into the next issue.
ARTWORK:
The art in this issue supports the story well. Jacob Perez uses a cartoon-inspired style that gives the book the feel of an animated series. It adds to the story’s playful energy without weakening its more serious moments. The darker colors match the narrative’s gloomier and more serious tone at the end. Even with its fun cartoon visual style, the artwork still gives the issue’s heavier scenes real impact.

Final Thoughts:
Royals #3 moves the story forward, well giving readers a big reason to pick up the next issue. This issue lulls you in with the sense that it’s just a filler issue, before punching you in the gut with an insane ending. This is definitely a story that just when you think you know what’s going on, it flips the script on you yet again.
