writing:

Ackerman brings the terror of modern society into the comic world while showing a brutal response to its evil ways. The opening sequence is a silent start with SNO agent Peyton Poole’s murder. There is a tense build ala horror movie style to begin this portion. It makes an instant impression on readers in the direction this leads. Once time jumps to a retirement celebration, more snakes come through the cracks.

Mike D’Angelo’s introduction as the new SNO associate director is met with much uncertainty. Chief Ric Rodriguez from Gladio Unit instantly comes in with much aggression in his voice. Bringing up Poole’s murder as the major reason starts painting a larger picture to grasp. This spins into a chaotic scene as emotions run high. The writing never deflects this. It lets each lead character take their swings, good or bad. After another resistance showcase, the closing shows more hate and ugliness carrying in certain players veins. While the Dialectic sends their message, the mystery surrounding the figure has already dented the aggressive units overseeing the city. Even with the chilling proclamation, there’s no denying the cracks in the distorted view of authority.

art & lettering:

Fuso & Simpson open with a smaller panel stage for Poole’s story. The images are tough to see at times but leads Poole into a terrifying two page spread. The Dialectic’s attack is ruthless in delivery. This is conveyed through a series of two page spreads. All are tough to watch but impact the role of the vigilante moving forward. Troutman’s letting jumps off panels as the fight takes place here. In its’ wake is even more unstable personalities.

Readers watch as the battle between SNO and Gladio reeks of anger and resentment. Rodriguez bursts onto pages with venom in his words. The mannerisms show a questionable figure trying to manipulate. Carruthers and D’Angelo show weathered looks as they get barked at by the Gladio unit. This instantly builds up the tension between all parties. The story segways to another portion where two figures are trying to help the less fortunate. Action picks up sightly here but result in steady fashion. This leaves a combustible final act to remain. Tempers flare until a bold final image leaves with an exclamation point on what is all spinning way out of control.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The Dialectic draws first blood and attention in their growing war for social justice. Ackerman takes readers into deep waters as the intensity as at an all time high. Fuso & Simpson craft amazing panels as the story takes its’ difficult shape. An unforgiving look at a broken world and one who refuses to stay silent in its’ chaos.
