NIGHTWING #133 (DC Comics)

The Zanni has struck Dick Grayson in an unthinkable manner.

Nightwing-Prime was taken out of commission by Olivia Pierce. When Grayson goes looking for revenge, he gets way more than bargained for.

During their encounter, the unthinkable happens. Pierce loses her own head. literally. All of this is caught on television. This frames Nightwing for her murder. All the while, the Cirque du Sin is growing its’ power in dark fashion.

NIGHTWING #133 by Dan Watters, V. Ken Marion, Veronica Gandini& Wes Abbott puts Grayson in harms way as Public Enemy #1!

Let’s take a closer look at what is going on now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Watters paints quite the picture with his writing. The meeting with Maggie Sawyer and Grayson is sharp and to the point. This shows Grayson reeling from what’s just unfolded. Readers watch as it serves as tough love motivation to get back out there. Grayson’s talk with his sister carries much of the same energy. Barbara Gordon’s portion is more of assessing the current situation. All of these hep Grayson to an extant. His next moves will be pivotal to stop the Zanni. Luckily, he has some major help stop by Bludhaven.

Martian Manhunter’s portion in the book is brief but effective. Venting about what he must do, Grayson bounces off plans with the JL mainstay. Their plan goes into effect but not without cost. Readers see Grayson must go confront the Zanni alone. Once he arrives in location, the mood shifts fast. There is an eerie chill to these pages. Grayson’s uneasiness unveils itself quickly. This pushes towards a more unlikely confrontation. Whether Grayson is ready or not is a whole other ball of wax.

Marion steps in for art duties on this chapter. The recap of Pierce’s “murder” fires off the new stat quo for Grayson. His meeting with Sawyer isn’t an easy one. The art locks in on Sawyer’s anger compared to Nightwing’s puzzled look. The same can be said for his sister. There is more compassion shown with a couple of quick laughs. It doesn’t take long for the mood to become dire. Once the guest star arrives, it’s an immediate impact.

The art locks in on panels that Manhunter is searching. Gandini’s use of the greens make the panels pop. Their dialogue is displayed with frustration and failing hope. A gorgeous two page splash transitions Grayson into uncharted water. The coloring is lighter with a dash of wonder behind them. As the smoke clears, a monster greets Grayson with a vicious edge to it. It becomes the tip of a cold, dramatic iceberg that cant be ignored. Grayson is in over his head. Even as Manhunter watches on, there seems to be more happening with the final panel. Rest assured, the art knows how to maximize every space given. This issue is prime example.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Dick Grayson has seen much in his days, but never like danger like this. Watters’ writing takes Nightwing out of his element & the public’s trust. Marion and Gandini craft amazing images to compliment a ever-changing landscape. This is one series you don’t want to pass up on for NCBD!
