NEW TITANS #35 (DC Comics)

In the aftermath of DC K.O., Victor Stone is a changed man AND machine!

The Titans have been stuck in a time-loop. This as rehashed old memories and given the team fits. Factor in a new group claiming they’re Titans, Nightwing and company have got some questions. None may raise eyebrows more than who is revealed behind all of this.

Their longtime member Cyborg has been split into a normal human and cold machine. Can they make sense of this mess before it’s too late?

NEW TITANS #35 by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Vicente Cifuentes, Jordi Tarragona, Adriano Lucas & Wes Abbott sees a very different story play out.

Let’s take a closer look at the latest issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal opens a brief overview of Eva and what she has to do with human Victor Stone. The dialogue works to convey the long-play idea of these actions. There are plenty of reveals for fans waiting for key answers. Stone’s plans are complex in construction. There are some nice one-liners thrown between Batgirl and Yara concerning events. The slight humor points are welcomed before the dream-esque backdrop turns south very quickly.

Readers watch as the heroes dive further into the “Robo-Cyborg’s” failsafes. Even with a quicker pace, the story stumbles into the major plot of this chapter. Vic Stone’s “talk” with his robotic self leans into a more personal direction. Their banter is very up and down to put it mildly. It ultimately results in explaining how this team appeared. There is a solid reveal of how events moved from Point A to Point B. The end result is a satisfying finish. It leaves readers with a great cliffhanger ending, which should catch some off-guard. Overall, a steady tale.

Basri and Lucas take the majority of pages for art duties this round. Eva’s introduction balances out an unstable opening. Vic’s address to the heroes is delivered in a direct fashion. There are some reactions to his words. Some carry a puzzlement to the announcements. A half panel ushers in some sorely needed action. Pacing picks up just enough to speed through the current combat. Where it ends up is a curious spot with more wonder behind it.

The strongest point of the book comes when Vic has his meeting with his other half. Readers watch as it is more of a casual setting compared to the other heroes. A solid two page splash shows a more exciting stand-off. It provides steady breaks between Stone’s deep conversation. There’s a good back and forth between both plots before coming to a head. Panels reflect why he new team was selected in a creative way. This helps push the book’s main focus back into the spotlight. A minor half panel springs the change onto the masses. It moves towards a calm finish and bold last page. This image should have fans talking as it has the makings for more chaos down the road.

FINAL GRADE: 8

Vic Stone’s dual lives come into focus as the Titans get some much needed answers to lingering plot threads. Brombal works in a great amount of reveals with the writing. The art teams shine brightest when there’s some emotional depth at hand. A curious finish ends this opening round with a future very uncertain.
