NEW TITANS #34 (DC Comics)

What is real and what is fake?

The Titans are trying to enjoy some morning coffee after the events of DC K.O. What should be easy like a Sunday morning quickly spins into a Saturday night alright for fighting. Many past moments creep into the present. One shakes everything up when they crash through the walls of Titan Tower.

A new group of heroes claim to be the New Titans. Wait….What?!

NEW TITANS #34 by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas & Wes Abbott continues its’ brand new storyline with many questions in the air.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what happens now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal throws many fakes into the mix before heading into the heart of the matter. The opening is much of the same as the heroes meet their “replacements”. Their encounter plays out like any superhero encounter. It doesn’t take long before the punches are thrown. The fight serves as a solid distraction for the issue’s big reveal. Knowing how DC K.O. has changed all of its’ entrants, this is one that fans might not have seen coming.

Cyborg’s new stat quo is one that has some possibilities behind it. The introduction of it makes sense but falls into a familiar theme. Having a corrupted persona form heads directly into the conflict at hand. Readers watch as the revelation spotlights the new team and why they are involved. The fallout comes via a surprise wildcard character. If you know your Titans history, its’ no shock she’s a trouble magnet. What she unlocks expose another unexpected reveal heading to close. The story is straight forward in process but creates enough detours to pivot if needed.

Basri and Lucas open with a few half page panels for each team to get needed page time. Their awkward meet-up leads to more uneasiness as certain members fall down off the playing field. This creates a great beginning for the traditional fight. A series of two page spreads debut the action. Readers watch as it gives some validity to this eclectic new group. This gets upstaged by a greater surprise than expected.

Seeing Cyborg in his new form stops events on a dime. The explanation panels detail what has happened since DC K.O. This results in a clear explanation of current events. Another series of great two page spread shows the new team at work. It helps sell their story to the audience. The pages also bring a steady close to this moment of conflict. In its aftermath, one member unleashes a near full page strike. This causes the final act to begins. The final page raises a few eyebrows as the closing panel reflect much of the readers thoughts to what is on display here.

FINAL GRADE: 8.3

Two Titan teams, One Huge Problem. Brombal’s writing leads into many avenues with the true reveal set in place. Basri & Lucas deliver on strong moments putting over the new squad. Readers will have much to comprehend after checking this issue out.
