NEW TITANS #33 (DC Comics)

In the aftermath of DC K.O., the Titans are reunited.

All seems well as they reconnect at Titans Tower. The band is really back together! When some familiar faces crash the party, it’s business as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary superhero life. Or Is It?

NEW TITANS #33 by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas & Wes Abbott kicks off a brand new era for the long running DC franchise.

Let’s take a closer look at what is transpiring here!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Brombal kicks off events with a very calm start. The team connecting over some morning coffee seems harmless enough. Readers watch as some classic villains crash the reunion. It leads to some quick action and a soft landing. It’s at this point, things go in a completely unexpected direction.

The writing takes readers on a reset with more past friends coming through for events. It allows some classic moments to be reimagined. One of which is a long standing romance that gave two members an identity. During this sequence, clues are given to what is going on. Brombal teases this element during panels until the ruse begins to crack. One drastic action knocks down the biggest domino, sending the story into a puzzling close. “Puzzling” is the key word as the final page unveils a new direction and the mystery where it leads.

Basri and Lucas keep panels very simplistic for the opening pages. A nine grid panel set-up welcomes the coffee into the celebration. This leads into a more proper image of the team celebrating. It is countered by a full shot of the party crashers. Events finish with an easy mid-panel of smiling faces before Nightwing says good night to the day’s events. Once this happens, the art plays a game of smoke and mirrors for the remainder of the issue.

Due to the story material, it is meant to be repetitive in display. Panels move fast with quick glimpses of Titans history. It captures the team’s emotions before focusing on its most famous pairing. Nightwing and Starfire convey their thoughts before a near full shot moves them into familiar settings. This changes rapidly once an action is taken. Another 9 grid set-up conveys the recourse into speeding to close. The final page is a full shot that raises many questions behind it. It’s a perfect closing image to lock readers in for next time. Solid work.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

“Run, Nightwing, RUN!” is the narrative as the Titans return from DC K.O. with a new mystery surrounding them. Brombal takes readers on a time-twisting tale with the writing. Basri & Lucas present the “Groundhog Day” theme with impressive images. A new day is dawning for the Titans. Jump on board now!
