MARC SPECTOR: MOON KNIGHT #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

There are certain actions you don’t want to take.

Spitting in the wind. Tugging on a Superhero’s cape.

Kidnapping Marc Spector has to be pretty high on that list. Someone has done just that. Who is crazy enough to try keeping MOON KNIGHT a prisoner against his will.

MARC SPECTOR: MOON KNIGHT #1 by Jed MacKay, Dev Pramanik, Rachelle Rosenberg, & Cory Petit (MARVEL COMICS) begins a new chapter for the night’s defender.

Let’s take a closer look at what is happening now.

MARC SPECTOR: MOON KNIGHT #1 by Jed MacKay, Dev Pramanik, Rachelle Rosenberg, & Cory Petit (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

MacKay puts together a very complex tale for Spector to sort out. His new “stat quo” is a false vision of reality. Seeing the conspirators behind this dilemma, readers can sense how fast this is going to backfire. Having Agence Byzantine orchestrate this action leads to a greater conspiracy at hand. Their search for a friend of Marc’s drives the extreme methods. Readers see “Mr. Smith” come across as a defiant man with a vision. His partner is equally as devious in executing their plans. It provides pushback to Spector’s sub-conscious will.

As time progresses, MacKay keeps applying the pressure onto Spector. This also weighs in on the rogues. The writing brings out the tension in the evil schemes. Each day, more weight is being added thinking Spector will break. Little do they know about the internal voice guiding him. This moves into the final act with a major surprise for longtime MK fans. A familiar face crashes the party. Reasons unknown but once he shows up, the mood swiftly changes. Readers will need to process what just happened cause the final page requires a double take.

Pramanik & Rosenberg open with the office setting of Mr. Smith. The art shows Spector as a lowly mail assistant trying to process what’s going on. Fear takes over Marc’s face as the meeting spirals into a larger picture of events. The conspirators’ demeanor changes to reflect their impatient game. Readers can sense their efforts stalling into greater measures. A two page spread shows Spector winding down with a recognizable face beaming from the TV.

With the chemical weapon ramping up, the art shows the delusions becoming more frightening. A full page “water cooler” image teases more than readers might pick up on. This starts shifting gears into the shocking guest star. A full page image welcomes them in via a bloody mess. Knowing the history, the reaction teases more as dialogue fills the panels. Once a gift is given, Rosenberg’s coloring lights up pages. Pramanik hits readers with a unique full page vision. Spector’s stare into the gift is mirrored by the chilling words of his backup. This leads into a stunning final page. Seeing said characters together in that manner is a hell of an exclamation point to walk out on. Excellent work.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Marc Spector’s latest adventure is one with many bold directions. MacKay orchestrates a wild ride with an even crazier ending with the writing. Pramanik & Rosenberg delivers on the ever tense scenario Moon Knight has found himself in. A new era begins that shines in the moonlight without question.
