ZERO INSTANCE #2 byFrank Barbiere, Stephen Rhodes, Vic Malhotra, Lauren Affe & Taylor Esposito (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Barbiere & Rhodes deal with establishing Chris’ impact to the readers to begin events. The recap makes his death all more tragic. Where events steer into the extreme is his body’s possession. Braxir’s dialogue is pained with adjusting to the real world. It is delivered with awkwardness As he peruses the new landscape. This allows for some other characters to get some page time before returning to this theme.

Spencer’s frantic attempt to find what escaped leads into more uncertainty. The writing attempts to eave more drama into events before shifting back to Braxir/Chris. His interaction with other humans vary until the brutality is allowed to breathe. Readers watch how fast he adapts in his new body. The other drama with Rhys & Spencer attempting to find Chris doesn’t match this intensity. It makes for a solid interaction but is upstaged by the villain’s actions. This leads into a chilling final page where a new game has started. Who will survive is anyone’s guess.

Malhotra & the art teamconstruct the opening pages as an homage to Chris’ life. Panels reflect his jovial upbringings leading into the fateful game night. It caps off with the painful aftermath of Braxir entering the real world. Images show his uncomfortable state as he takes Chris’ body. Its’ body language is very traditional in presentation. Readers can easily see the “fish out of water” themes play out while the other characters regroup.

Both Rhys and Spencer’s paths take different turns. In dealing their friends, both are trying to make sense of Chris’ disappearance. All the while, his acclamation to human life is not without some violence. His exposure to food makes for a brief humor piece. These panels choose violence as Braxir’s wants become more than cordial. This becomes worse when another character crosses its’ path. A stroking half panel shows their demise as events more towards a complex finish. The interactions between Rhys and Spencer give way to the final page. A haunting vision leaves readers with a chilling promise. Buckle in for this one.

FINAL GRADE: 8

The line is crosses between fantasy and real life when one of Rhys’ raid members is taken off the board. The writing steers into familiar themes as Braxir refuses to go away quietly. Malhotra & the art team never back down from bringing the mystery to focus. The horror continues to expand its’ AoE with no easy way out.
