Kudrański brings a sense of caution and worry to the majority of panels for this chapter. Smalls’ restlessness leads into a more impactful talk with Anna. His features never waiver on the acceptance of what he’s trying to do. This mood moves through Anna towards Gabriel with much friction. Readers can easily sense the fear of attempting such a radical idea. This moves more attention to Smalls’ reactions of failure and desperation in these trying times.
Panels begin to show the trepidation on the faces of the Doldrum caste as they hear Small’s ambition. There is overwhelming doubt flooding the panels. Once a surprise voice takes center stage, the art reflects the swing in momentum. It ushers in a hasty attempt to get events moving. This provides readers a tiny glimpse of action as the initial step starts. Readers see Smalls’ fear simmer as he presses forward. Shifting coloring from green to red indicates the danger forthcoming. It’s a well placed move that ignites the closing act. A ruthless sequence sets up a bold final full page. Rest assured, the fight has only begun.

Robert Smalls’ initial moves are met with some resistance as time is not on his side. Guggenheim and Morello’s writing show the conviction in the fight for freedom. Kudrański brings out the uncertainty of failure with thoughts of rebellion with the art. It proves all it takes is an idea to spark a revolution.
