Knull #2 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of Knull from Marvel Comics!

Knull is BACK! However he’s no longer the King in Black, that title is now held by none other than the God of Death herself Hela! So just what schemes does she have planned, and just what is Knull going do about it? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // Knull #2 by Al Ewing & Tom Waltz (Writers), Juanan Ramirez (Artist), Erick Arciniega (Color Artist), VC’s Clayton Cowles (Letterer), Ryan Stegman & Frank Martin (Cover) is a great follow up to the first issue, and keeps the intrigue going.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Al Ewing & Tom Waltz continue to impress with their storytelling in this series. The groundwork they’re laying for the series and what’s to come is simply astounding and absolutely incredible. The issue isn’t one of the big Marvel events that take place, but they’re giving it the feel of one.

The issue has a couple of interesting storylines taking place in it, and none more so than seeing Thanos back in action. He appears to be up to his usual tricks, but what exactly his end goal is anyone’s guess. Just as interesting is when he comes face to face with Knull who’s on a journey to claim a prize that will help him reclaim his King in Black title.

There is also an interesting scene with Hela that suggests she has more pawns on in play than just Knull. It’s definitely going to be interesting to see it play out and discover just who exactly those pawns are. I also can’t help but wonder if she’s perhaps going to overextend herself and play into Knull’s success. Of course only time will tell.

Then there’s the ending, which is a great one and sets up for a very interesting issue #3. This series continues to impress and set the groundwork for some really great storytelling that is sure to have to some far reaching impact on the larger Marvel comics universe. You simply don’t involve this many characters with their level of power and just have a throw away story that might get referenced down the road.

The Artwork

Juanan Ramirez & Erick Arciniega continue to a great job with the artwork in the series. I love the way they were able to use the color so effectively between Knull, Thanos & Hela’s scenes. They’re each so different with the color style, and the color style of each works really for them. Though I will say the color scheme in Knulls panels is a little surprising, but interesting nonetheless! The artwork continues to be one of the most visually stunning comics you’ll read.

FINAL POINT: Al Ewing & Tom Waltz continue the tremendous start from the prior issue, and it seriously does not disappoint. Together with artwork that will leave you impressed, this is an issue that is sure to leave you wanting more!

Overall Grade: 9/10
