DEADLY HANDS OF K’UN-LUN #1 by Yifan Jiang, Paco Medina, Ceci de la Cruz & Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Jiang opens with a true game changing event. Un-aliving the Immortal Weapons is a bold statement. This also appeases Davos, who’s no stranger to tactics like this. The dialogue is direct as Feng directs traffic. His paring with Loki is very interesting. Readers watch as the goal is laid out. It is an ambitious one in design. The dialogue hits on the underlying tension between “partners”. It is a far cry from what is happening with Iron Fist.

Readers watch as Lie and White Fox attempt to halt an aquarium disturbance. The conflict brings in the inexperience of the hero. This provides a bit of a challenge in sub doing the beast in combat. It’s a familiar set-up. The fallout casts into question the worthiness of having Danny Rand’s mantle. As for Rand, his new stat quo continues to pose questions. It also throws in more intrigue when someone is caught lurking in shadows.

The issue picks up when events land in Hell’s Kitchen. There’s a fair amount of action placed to give Feng’s plans more seriousness. Readers see how Iron Fist is dealing with the mounting drama. The writing doesn’t tip too much of its’ hand before heading to close. Once here, there is no question of how fast events will move rom this stage. It’s a good landing stage to grow upon.

MORE FROM IRON FIST!

Median and De La Cruz display Feng’s attacks with much venom. There is little held back when Davis is involved. Events move to his meeting with Loki with more questions attached. Readers watch as the talk becomes a but of one-upmanship. This mood teeters on Iron Fist and company as they handle the aquarium issue. The near full page makes the issue clear before the novice defense begins.

There’s a touch of playful fun involved during the action. Case in point is Fist’s smooshed face into the glass tank. Action panels move fast into the close. The full tablet image lets readers know how things played out. There’s a few ranges of reactions shown before letting Danny Rand have his time. While brief, it serves its’ purpose. This allows the Hell’s Kitchen time to shine. Fighting escalates quickly with more joining the battle. This leads into a solid two page spread that shoulders into the close. The art team caps off events with a pair of full page images teasing trouble ahead. Readers walk away expecting more action waiting for them when the series returns.

FINAL GRADE: 8

Lin Feng’s takeover of the Heavenly Cities begins a full on invasion into Iron Fist’s life in this debut chapter. Jiang opens and closes very strongly with the wiring. Median and De La Cruz unveil the evil schemes with does of action in-between. The ending will spark some interest in where this all leads to next. Stay Tuned.
