Let’s take a closer look at events!

IRON MAN #10 by Joshua Williamson, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard &Joe Caramagna (MARVEL COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson takes readers on one hell of a ride with this emotional reunion. The opening pages reveal Happy’s first meetings with Tony, followed by a “This is your Life” segway. After reliving his “death”, the writing steers into his new era beginnings. It teases something more elusive in waiting but for now, it works to set the pace. Once in present time, the action kicks into high gear. Whiplash’s schemes prove to be outsmarted to a dangerous level.

Readers watch as Tony gives everyone reasons to be worried. The massive swing in defense proves to be enough to end this stage with a definitive finish. It provided a great pivot point to the real reason for conflict. Once the smoke clears here, the focus is all on Happy and Tony. Their conversation becomes heated as the personal wounds are re-opened. This also allows a major plot point to resurface. It moves events into a steady finish while teasing more trouble en route. The final page welcomes back another thorn in Tony’s side, ready to strike when the timings right. An excellent read from start to finish.

Carnero and Woodard take the throwback pages and give them a classic look. This is in large part to the coloring of Woodard. It gives panels a nice throwback look to capture the past emotions. Once events time jump to present, a spectacular two page spread welcomes the next round of action. This keeps building through the other panels until it hits a breaking point. A stunning full page image changes course of direction to end the fight. It’s fallout presents a greater danger ahead.

The reunion between Tony and Happy is filled with frustration and bitter anger. Both characters take personal shots without holding back. Panels reflect this in their faces as the words start flying. It leads to an intervention of sorts with two guests’ arrival. Their full page entrance concludes matters in this area while staging the close. The final pages show more devious plans in motion with a new player entering the game. The full page image shows how moves in the shadows spell doom for Tony sooner than later. Solid presentation all around with the panels.

FINAL GRADE: 9.3

Tony’s world is rocked again with the return of Happy Hogan! Williamson tears into the man behind the armor with superb writing. Carnero and the team construct excitement on each page. The legend of Tony Stark grows larger with every story told here!
