STORY OVERVIEW:

Abraham Lincoln finds himself in robot prison for telling the cops he saw a human. He finds himself talking to another “defective” robot, Speed, who warns Abe about telling people about his crazy human story. Abe and Speed find themselves getting moved from zone to zone in this prison, until they end up in a reprograming unit. But somehow Abe can’t be reprogrammed, which causes him to be sent to the interrogator. Speed is also there, and now they face their untimely demise. Will Abe and Speed make it out of prison? And is Abe crazy or do humans still exist in this robot world?

WRITING:

This issue takes the reader on a ride through the hell of the robot world. Mathew & Mark Rosenberg show the reader the underbelly of the robot world and how Abe navigates said world. His inability to shut his mouth continues to get him in trouble, and this gives the Rosenberg’s a great plot device to work off. Because of this we get introduced to Speed, who reminds me of a slightly more serious Bender from Futurama. Speed delivers some comedy beats as well as solutions to the problems Abe finds himself in. This issue builds up nicely and allows the reader to become fully emerged in this world. The Rosenberg’s leave this issue with a huge cliffhanger that will surely set the pace for where we are going in this series.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue matches the tone and vibe of the story perfectly. Andy MacDonald brings the robot prison to life and makes all the different levels stand out and feel different. As Abe & Speed make their way through the levels, MacDonald shows all the different kinds of robots that inhabit each level. The variety of robots that are on display show different characteristics, also representing each different level in intensity. Francesco Segala compliments the artwork with his color choices. The colors make the designs stand out, as well as show the mood of the environment we find ourselves going through.

Final Thoughts:

If Destruction Be Our Lot #2 is a nicely paced story that shows the reader the darker side of this world. As we go through the different levels of this prison, it really feels like we are going through the different levels of Dante’s Hell. Not only does the story deliver on this level, but it also delivers with a great cliffhanger that is sure to hook every reader. This series is two issues in and it’s already making its way to one of my favorite books in the shop. Grab a copy at the shop this week and find out what I’m talking about.
