Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories - Codebreaker #4

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 4th and FINAL issue of Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories - Codebreaker #4 from Dark Horse Comics!

Poe Dameron & BB-8 have been on a mission to find a First Order codebreaker in order to get a leg up on their enemy. However as we found out in the last issue, the codebreaker isn’t an inanimate object but rather an actual person! Now, with their back against the wall and the First Order bearing down on them just how will they escape this jam? Let’s jump into it!

The Story

Ethan Sacks did a really good job packing some action into this finale. It kicks off right from the start with the First Order forces bearing down on our heroes that are still aboard the museum of the battle over Bothawui and in a tight space.

I really enjoyed how tense this issue was from start to finish, and how it gave you this feeling of not really knowing how things were going to turn out. As is the case with a lot of Star Wars content these days, we know that Poe & BB-8 are going to be okay. However that isn’t the case for Cheka the codebreaker.

The issue does play into Poe’s strength’s and that’s being a really good pilot. It features some spectacular space battles with a Z-95 Headhunter being piloted by Poe. I have to say, seeing that was totally unexpected but it’s always a good thing when you get to see the precursor to the X-Wing.

I really enjoyed the way the series ended, and it pays off really well for the entire series. Also it goes along with a theme that we see throughout the sequel series and that’s despite how bad things might look, that there’s always a little bit of light and hope still in the universe.

The Artwork

Marc Yarza, Jose Marzan Jr & Nicola Righi really do a standout job in the issue at giving it a very realistic look that is familiar to Star Wars fans who’ve been reading the comics for the last 10 years or so. The space battles in this issue are absolutely spectacular and worth the purchase alone.

FINAL POINT: Ethan Sacks closes out a really fun series that I enjoyed way more than I expected. A story filled with twists & turns that is sure to keep you turning the page right up to the end. Along with some artwork that is really stellar, all fans of Star Wars should check this series out!

Overall Grade: 8/10
