HARLEY QUINN #67 by Elliott Kalan, Carlos Olivares, Marissa Louise & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
WRITING:
Kalan leans into the chaotic relationship of Harley and Ivy as a major driver for her actions this issue. While trying to find Ivy, NKVDemon comes back for round two. The writing shows Harley impacted by the toxic air from the plant spores. What results after is a trippy, yet confusing look at her current status.
The writing mixes in some psychedelic looks while teasing elements of Pamela and Harley’s love. Readers get some unique flashbacks that teeter on reality and delusion. This escalates even further as the toxin affects Quinn. There’s still plenty of the Harley one-liners in play but balancing them around the hallucinations is difficult. This formula keeps pushing events forward until a moment of clarity changes all. It provides a solid finish but room open for more resolution to come. .
MORE BAD SEEDS!
ART AND LETTERING:
Olivares & Louise offer classic Harley moments while running through Gotham’s streets. The spore explosion causes more uneasy images to appear as Harley is getting poisoned. A full page shows how affected Harley is with multiple colors swirling panels around. Once this levels out, the flashback moments with Ivy start flying in.
The usage of black & white coloring to actual is a creative take. It does become confusing at points with all the moving parts on page. A solid full page shows the classic outfits for the couple as they pull a bank heist. Another color blend page is helped tremendously by Gattoni’s lettering. It gives just enough impact to the strikes to pop on the panels. The back and forth with coloring continues with many looks of the pair thought-out the years till the fight’s rallying point. Once in the closing, pages reflect a calmer state to end one bout and walk off with a unique look to the future.
FINAL GRADE: 7
Harley’s fight to get to Poison Ivy is met with a multitude of varying looks and coloring. Kalan implements the classic Harley reactions with the script . The art & lettering take big swings with its’ presentation. An extra, yet non vital piece to the larger “Bad Seeds” picture.
