GREEN LANTERN CORPS #17 (DC COMICS)

Guy Gardner’s tenure as The “Allsight of Oa” has been rocky at best

The Emotional Entities have become a puzzle onto themselves. Searching for answers put Guy and the Corps in the path of the Manhunters. It resulted in a disastrous manner.

After surviving that attack, another has arose. A black hole looks to claim the heroes. The fate of their future may rest upon Guy’s shoulders. Oh Boy.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #17 by Morgan Hampton, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto & Dave Sharpe throws a distinct curveball into the mix with this presentation.

Let’s take a closer look at Guy’s thoughts surrounding this latest challenge.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Guy Gardner’s tale is presented in a very unique fashion. Turning the book sideways allows for more splash spreads and a clearer weight of the moment. To be honest, I haven’t seen many books try this technique before (save X-Force #3). This allows Hampton to plunge into Garnder’s soul with huge results. Guy’s past is not a happy one. The writing brings out many of those repressed moments to usher him into a much needed chat….with himself.

The conversation with his future self is filled with friction and raw reactions. It is what you fully expect from Guy. Once common ground is hit, the mood softens to allow “The Allsights” to refocus and take a small victory lap. These moments are few and far between for Gardner. Readers watch as a possible solution forms. The cost proves to have him examine how emotions fuel his power. It results in a strong finish while bringing Guy back to a proper status. The final moments add a nice touch to solidify what fans already knew: there’s no quit in the GLC!

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Pasarin and the art team goes longform for the duration of this issue. With the great deal of two page spreads, this might be a shorter review than normal but don’t think it’s less quality work. Far from that. The opening full page shows Guy’s spiral into the abyss of space. Its met with a painful look at his relationship with his abusive father after various timeline images. The full page shattering of the grid sees Guy thrown in the way of his future self.

A quick skirmish is capped off with a phenomenal full page “pinball” shot. Their talk shows cracks in the tough guy personas. It allows some rare emotions to pour out into the panels. This moves Guy into meeting with the great mystery itself. Readers will be impressed with all that they see in these pages. Once the resolution begins, another incredible full page shows Guy reliving his best moments. It helps to move events into the final stages with a plan of attack to see the comeback occur.

FINAL POINT: 9

With the fate of the GLC in his hands, Guy Gardner faces his inner emotions in an impactful manner. Hampton showcases much versatility in the writing. The art teamtakes a hugh risk for greater payoffs with the page presentations. This series has been nothing but win! Don’t miss out!
