*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Hampton opens with a small peek at Enquar & Fatality scheming in the distance. It helps plant some seeds for later, but ltimately segways to the main players. Having Kilowog and Guy Gardner work with the new class of Lanterns works to assist this sub-plot. Once Jessica Cruz takes the spotlight, the mood instantly changes. It falls to one of calm confidence. Readers can easily see the set-up. Someone is trying to destroy the peace. On this planet, there’s only one party that could be this selfish.
Larfleeze’s scheming leads the entire planet into danger. the writing sets up his move perfectly. There’s a touch of unhinged madness as the action commences. Its fallout causes much chaos on the planet. How one action splinters to affect this many proves how dangerous of a threat the Orange Lantern is. Readers watch as the action starts picking up quickly. Hampton brings most side-plots together to take the story to close. One left by itself is the John Stewart saga. This hits on its’ mark before jumping back into Oa’s battle. Once the smoke simmers down, the final pages come full circle onto the close. There are many characters to juggle but all felt like they had ample time to impact. Curious to see how next issue plays out.
The art team bring out the sheer bliss of Enquar and Fatality’s planet attack. Their reactions to a successful plan works to build up momentum for the chapter. The more easier moments with Guy and Kilowog break up tension until Jessica addresses the masses. The grid panel structure assist in elevating her proclamation. It moves events to the eventual confrontation of Larfleeze. The half page panel leads directly to his attack via full page image. The art team gives him that much space to fully encompass the story.
The aftermath leads to many excellent action moments. From the possessed Thanagarians fighting Guy and Kilowog to the monster battle at the capital, fans wanting big action have it. The only slower portion here is John Stewart and Katma. Thier deep rooted emotions are unlocked by Larfleeze’s act. It spins into a more heavier reaction than just a fight. Stewart’s reactions are worn right on his sleeve. The final pages allow for Aya to have a breakout moment. Considering what she sees on the final full page, it may not be the one she wants. Plenty for fans to enjoy via the art.
FINAL POINT: 8.2
The peaceful notion of Lanterns living on one planet goes up in a cloud of orange smoke (literally) this chapter. Hampton balances a very large ensemble cast to a steady moving chapter. The art team lean heavy into the action for a solid read. How the Lanterns rebound from a threat within should be fun to watch.
