STORY OVERVIEW:

After Barney saves Tariq yet again, Tariq has a realization that it is better to have no mercy, then it is to look for answers and have friends. He tells Barney that he can rejoin the other friends and leave him be, but Barney isn’t going anywhere. As they clear a safe place to stay, a weird light show takes place, and a man appears before them. This is the Northerner and he says he is from the year 1864. Not having many answers himself, it’s hard for him to convince Tariq. He ends up earning a kernel of trust as a bag of guns appears on command. This is what convinces Tariq to take him to Detroit as that is where his mission needs him to go. This is where we discover that the Northerner is originally from a timeline where the South wins the Civil War and he is being sent through time to set reality right. However, some pirates have other ideas for our travelers.

WRITING:

This is a great kickoff to this first crossover event in the world of Geiger. Geoff Johns does an incredible job of bringing the world’s together and bringing Geiger readers up to speed (loosely) about the Northerner. Johns really captures the shock that someone from the past would find themselves in if they ended up in this post-apocalyptic world. The doubt Tariq is feeling before the arrival of the Northerner really humanizes the traumas he’s been through. That hero’s doubt fits the character perfectly and definitely sets up where the story is headed as it moves forward.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue stands out as exceptional, maintaining the series’ well-earned reputation for outstanding visuals. Under the direction of Gary Frank, the art team delivers something truly special that elevates the overall experience of the book. Brad Anderson’s color choices play a significant role in bringing the illustrations to life, adding vibrancy and depth to every scene. This careful use of color enhances the mood and atmosphere, ensuring that each moment resonates with the reader.

The collaboration between the artists is a key factor in the issue’s success. Their ability to work seamlessly together results in consistently high-quality visuals that not only complement the story but also keep the audience engaged. This level of artistry demonstrates why the team is regarded as one of the best in comics today, showcasing their talent and dedication to producing work that truly stands out.
