Even since Hal Jordan discovered his name in the Book of OA, he has been on a mission to find out why.

His quest has put him in harms way while allowing Krona to work behind the scenes on some revenge of his own.

This allowed Kyle Rayner to resume duties in Sector 2814. However, a visit from an old friend looks to pull Rayner away from Earth and into a battle no one could possibly be ready for!

GREEN LANTERN #40 by Jeremy Adams, Scott Godlewski, Vasco Georgiev, Romulo Fajardo Jr., & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS) begins “FIRST LIGHT”!

Let’s take a closer look.

GREEN LANTERN #40 by Jeremy Adams, Scott Godlewski, Vasco Georgiev, Romulo Fajardo Jr., & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams rolls out the new crossover with some heavy moments mixed in with the build. The opening is more unpredictable as Krona walks readers through the unstable set-up. This spins events back to Kyle Rayner and an immediate threat. The writing is straight forward here while dealing with his ever-present relationship woes. Once Tom Kalmaku arrives, everything changes.

Readers watch as Tom’s words lead Kyle back to familiar but new territory. His re-introduction to OA comes with some great laughs in dealing with “The Allsight”. It’s a nice transition from Jordan’s confrontations. This sets a solid exploration into the main themes of this event. Adams caps off the closing act with more shocked reactions from Kyle about the Lanterns state of affairs. Nothing will get anyone ready for the final page. Its’ a strong way to end events with major ramifications en route!

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Godlewski is on Hollywood art & Georgiev handles duties for OA. The opening space odyssey plays into a trippy visual until crashing onto Krona’s full page look. The story jumps to Hollywood where Rayner goes right into action. His battle with Temptation moves fast with some reactions shown when Jade injects her quips into the panels. An impressive full page strike ends the fight while welcoming a transition point along the way.

On OA, the art is more light-hearted as Rayner adjusts to all the changes taking place. His reaction to Gardner as Allsight is incredible. This moves into more composed looks as the Guardian leadership start assessing events. Readers watch as more characters are added into the field. A solid half panel shows Rayner who’s just joined. It sparks a few looks the final page shocks everyone. A bold full image brings forth a new challenge that no one will see coming. Solid work all around.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Kyle Rayner’s return to OA is far from a social visit as Hal Jordan hunts dangerous secrets in the crossover opener. Adams’ writing sets a high bar for where this story is going. The art teams channels a great balance of action and drama. The final page is sure to draw some attention as OA’s hidden truths are about to come to light….first light.
