STORY OVERVIEW:

The G-Force USA Team is being stretched thin as they try and deal with the stampede of Kaiju. Dr. Chiba’s plan is to split up and slow down the Kaiju long enough for Jacen to be deployed to the field where he can unleash the power of Godzilla. Nuki is sent after Black Hart, Incense is sent after Ursogar, Commander Rivera is sent after Styrga, and Dr. Chiba takes on Rodan. Unfortunately for the Team, no matter how hard they try they can’t stop the Kaiju. The monsters are determined and it feels like they are being called somewhere. When Jacen finally hits the battlefield is it already too late and what of the mysterious puppet master that is pulling the strings of the Kaiju?

WRITING:

This is one exciting and action-packed issue that leaves the reader on the edge of their seat. Tim Seeley delivers a ton of action mixed with a lot of emotions and uncertainties in this issue. As the Team battles the Kaiju threat, they must also overcome the unknown of how Jacen will perform in the field. The last time he was in battle he nearly blew up Las Vegas, and no one wants a repeat of that. Seeley really makes the uncertainty of Jacen’s control and involvement a center piece, well not directly focusing on it. This subtle yet obvious nudge really builds emotions. The drama of the Team fighting as hard as they can, but not being enough also takes the reader on an emotional ride. Finally, Seeley does an amazing job of leaving this issue on an emotional cliffhanger, well at the same time reminding us that there is an unknown force controlling these events that our Team doesn’t know exists. This really gets the reader excited about the next issue and the continuation of the series.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this issue perfectly matches the action-packed story that it’s telling. Giada Belviso captures the action and fight scenes with some beautiful and detailed artwork. The Kaiju designs and the stunning and epic fight scenes jump off the page and capture the readers’ attention. Belviso’s attention to detail allows the reader to see the emotions and the mood that this story has created, well not sacrificing any of the badass fight scenes. The color choices used by Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli amplify Belviso’s artwork and bring the entire issue to life. This art team really excelled in this issue, and it shows in the work that is in each panel of this issue.

Final Thoughts:

Godzilla #9 has a ton of action but is also packed with a lot of heart. This series has been great at entertaining with amazing fight scenes, well also delivering some well-placed drama, and this issue continues that trend. The Kai-Sei Era has been a different and fresh take on the Godzilla mythos and has really delivered in my opinion. If you are looking for something that is familiar well also feeling fresh and new, this series is definitely for you. Grab a copy at the Comic Shop this week and give this story a chance.
