FREE PLANET #7 (IMAGE COMICS)

The history of the planet Lutheria is one paved with promise and conflict.

Getting thrown into the fire, the Freedom Guard has had their hands full. Clashing personalities and constant fighting became a normal occurrence. It has lead to a multi-leveled vision of the true definition of being free.

Another planet has gone through its’ fair share of violence. The planet Thouros is one that has a history which gives pause for caution. How it ended up with the Interplanetary Development Alliance is a story onto itself.

FREE PLANET #7 by Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Ilias Kyriazis, Vittorio Astone and Taylor Esposito (Image Comics) kicks off “EXPANSION PROTOCOLS”.

Let’s take a closer look at how this new arc begins!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One strength of Sitterson’s writing is how detailed and layered the levels are. Some may think this is too intense. I think this is very necessary in any type of world building. The opening pages show what has driven Thouros to thrive over the years. Its’ dedication to military growth is a vital part of its’ identity. The writing tackles this head on when introducing Durrel and Hrinden. Both have their complexity to their personalities. It results in a brutal role of finding identity.

As events play out, the tone portrays one of loss and searching. Readers watch as a violent nature takes over inhabitants. This leads into the IDA involvement. Sitterson sets the stage with the heavily rooted political aspects they bring. Seeing the Hrind let their emotions take hold proves costly. Readers watch as alliances are formed under grave circumstances. It takes more twists until arriving in a new and surprising landing spot. Costly choices named in the face of adversity? It is eerily similar to Lutheria’s current situation. Quite the experience for readers on the high price of society order.

Kyriazis steps in for art duties this chapter. The entire book is filled with two page pieces (save the first and last page). Opening with the fire and water piece, readers watch as the disasters start unfolding on the inhabitants. It fits with the angry dialogue spoken by the two entities overseeing events here. Urlonian leader Durrel and Hrinden both get dramatic entrances into the fray. Both carry a certain presence as they ponder what is unfolding. There is much to take in as the brutality takes center stage.

Readers watch as the hostile advances break a breaking point. The before and after of Edinia is shocking and unrelenting. It carries a variety of emotion before being interrupted. The IDA make a subtle debut in comparison. There are more hidden schemes at play during these pages. It results into a chaotic finish of their takeover. The art teases peace until the last page upends everything. The pain felt through the last character’s eyes cements the extreme measures involving the planet’s future. A very fresh look before moving forward.

FINAL GRADE: 8.4

Lutheria proves to be not alone in its’ struggles for order and peace. Sitterson takes readers on an odyssey into a broken society trying to keep itself from falling. Kyriazis’s art is detailed and impressive in handling the multiple challenges surrounding Thourus. “Free Planet” gives readers a complete story with all it could want in storytelling. Do not pass this up at the LCS!
