WRITING:
The writing focuses heavily on Ben’s uneasiness in his new role. It shows Ben’s anxiousness in trying to understand what he’s transformed to. The instability of his control takes a toll on the young hero. This provides a transition point to his grandfathers troubles. Max’s secrets start creeping into the spotlight. It adds more intrigue to his side plot. His dialogue keeps readers guessing as the story switched gears.
Readers watch as the next threat makes a loud debut. It runs parallel to what the writing has been setting up. Throwing Ben into the hero mix isn’t without complications. A new curve is added as the panic sinks in. It allows for a direct finish while running another plot point full circle. The issue does add more depth into an ever-growing origin saga.

ARTWORK:
Carey and Spiller deliver on huge moments when it involves Ben’s transformations. The full shot of Heatblast unleashes his own frustration in events. Ben’s reactions go through a series of changes before setting on an upset child. The emotions take over panels before moving into a more serious tone. Max’s plot carries a heavier weight but echoes much of the same uncertainty as his grandson.
Panels don’t wait too long to come back to the fun creature aspects. Another full page welcomes Ben’s next adversary. Krabb makes a defiant statement in handling the soldiers attacking him. It is more graphic than one may expect, but nothing over the top. Panels give way to allow for another Ben transformation. The near full page is a fantastic transformation sequence. It helps set up the surprising last pages. Events close with a curious last panel with more story following suit.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
Ben Tennyson’s new stat quo is met with endless challenges and a new threat on the horizon. The writing slowly builds more additions into the fresh origin stage. Excellent art sells the ever-evolving matters at hand. For anyone looking for a great superhero saga to start, this is your book!
