STORY OVERVIEW:
Brothers Daniel & Benedict Durante are from a very wealthy family but are troubled. They have a need for power and are willing to gain this power by any means. As Daniel gets older, he finds himself as the owner and CEO of Earth’s largest space travel corporation. His obsession with power by any means has now brought him to search for the legendary ship Event Horizon, which disappeared 200 years ago, to be found 7 years later, to only disappear again without a trace. However now Daniel and a team of space travelers that he has assembled have finally found the lost ship. As his crew enters the Event Horizon, they discover this ship has a lot of nightmarish secrets, and Daniel has not been completely honest with them.
WRITING:
This first issue sets the tone and pace very well for what is to come in this series. Christian Ward returns to the world of Event Horizon and shows he hasn’t missed a step since Event Horizon: Dark Descent. Starting with a mysterious but disturbing backstory about the Durante brother’s, Ward creates an uneasy air and feel around this story. This story’s nightmarish factor starts on the opening pages and builds from there. Ward masterfully lays the groundwork and introduces the cast of characters that we will be following through this series. This groundwork not only makes you familiar with the characters but also shows the reader exactly what kind of person Daniel is. Fans of Event Horizon: Dark Descent get an awesome surprise to end this first issue which perfectly ties in that series, well also teasing the horrors we are in for in this series.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this first issue compliments the story perfectly and brings the suspense and horror to life. Rob Carey captures the essence of the franchise and brings Ward’s story to life in the most nightmarish way possible. The character designs bring life and uniqueness to the cast of characters in this story. The ships and settings feel like they are larger than life, well at the same time create a claustrophobic atmosphere. Carey really shines with the portrayal of the suspense in his artwork, which really makes the reader nervous about turning the page and discovering what awaits them. The horror in the story is enhanced immensely with the artwork and is sure to keep readers up at night after reading the book.
Note: Since IDW Publishing was so gracious to give us such an advanced copy, the colors were not added yet. This is why there is no mention of the color work in this issue. If the uncolored art is any indication, the colors will look awesome, and I personally can’t wait to see the final finished issue.
Final Thoughts:
Event Horizon: Inferno #1 is an awesome first issue of a series that is sure to make every horror comic fan rejoice. The story is made up of the nightmare fuel that we have come to expect from this franchise. Fans of the Event Horizon franchise will be very happy with this story and on the edge of their seats for more. But even if you are not a fan of the franchise you will be drawn in by the story and entranced by the artwork. Make sure to get down to your Local Comic Shop or your preferred online store before Monday March 16th and order your copy of the first issue so you don’t miss out on what promises to be one of the best horror series of 2026.
