DO NOT DISTURB #2 by David Flores, Jarod Hunter Roe, Lorenzo Scaramella, & Letter Squids (Invader Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Flores & Roe take Halsey into the deep waters of the Argyle with dangerous results. His confrontation with the desk clerk carries a tough tone as he’s pushing his new found agenda. It is countered with Oscar Moran’s more laid back charm. Their awkward pairing is a strength to the overall tale. Oscar’s breakdown of events introduces readers to more questionable characters haunting the building. Belsario’s crew adds a more criminal piece to the overall puzzle. It reflects the time aspect which this story has dabbled with. Not everything is a straight line. Adding some curves on the path builds up to greater peaks.
This shines when a new face strolls by the duo. Halsey’s curiosity leads to a cautious talk with Iris. Their dialogue has both not ready to reveal their agendas. Another voice sends Halsey into the belly of the beast. Readers watch as his journey spotlights his redemption attempts. The writing has painted him as a lovable loser to a certain degree. When confronting Belsario’s associates, his persona switches. It doesn't come without complications. The final act takes him to his intended target of investigation. One here the dialogue proves Halsey is out of his league. The final page leaves nothing to chance in showing the errors of judgement linger now a much as they did while living.

Flores opens up on the personalities in the Argyle right from the start. Halsey’s stern glares get met with a non-caring response from the clerk. It adds to the desperation Halsey shows while trying to solve his case. The 80’s bar serves as a fresh backdrop into the ever-evolving hotel. Coloring cracks the mood as Belsario’s crew holds court. Oscar’s breakdown is brief but gives way to his overall charm. This is a great contrast from Halsey. Seeing this new world drives him into his own hopefulness.
The encounter with Iris opens with a full shot of the hotel “pool”. Their meeting carries a fragile feel. Both are skeptical of the other. It keeps pace with their dialogue. Once Halsey deceds further on the case, the hotel changes its’ look. A glowing full shot spotlights Belsario’s vision. The panels feel out of a classic Hollywood film. Halsey’s encounter with Belsario’s crew brings a touch of action as Halsey adopts a tough persona. It’s met with real danger as the fallout spins to the closing. His encounter with the boss never settles to a peaceful chat. A full page ushers Halsey into his next phase with grave consequences looming. Solid work.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Randall Halsey’s unexpected residency at the Argyle brings unwelcomed attention his way in the latest installment. Flores & Roe’s writing hits the key points as the mystery expands. The art captures the era its’ set in with superb illustrations. Where this all leads is anyone’s guess but there’s no way not to be locked in for the long haul!
