FANTASTIC FOUR #7 by Ryan North, Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, JP Meyer, Edgar Delgado & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

North makes the distress call more complex than anyone may anticipate. The writing shows how the team is handling this proclamation. It also spins into what to do with the “Junior Fantastic Four”. One voice takes charge of matters and its refreshing to hear her lead plans. Alicia Masters’ dialogue puts any doubts to a pause while reassuring all who this family is. It is a minor moment on the grand scale, but needed. Often readers forget, the Four is a family but family never stops at four.

This also leads to an interesting course of action from Marvel’s first family. The writing shows the measures taken in precaution to world events. It is a great insight to the lengths they go to protect. One pairing is a somewhat surprise but one that is winning fans over. Once the family leaves, the story picks up pace. Action begins and North pulls a great swerve to finish the fight. It is one that is ingenious in planning but fitting for who quarterbacked it. The final page provides a soft landing for a most engaging story.

Ramos and the art team open with a full page breaking down Galactus’ cry for Sue Storm. There is a large sense of worry and uncertainty on the pages. Alicia Masters’ calm demeanor takes charge and ushers in the next portion of story. This goes back to Fantastic Four basics as Reed and the team work on a new spaceship and gadgets. From here, the art hones in on other members as they prepare. This provides some twists and turns going into the major conflict of the issue.

There’s one area that cant be ignored with one member. Can we please do something about Johnny’s mustache? His meeting with Wyatt Wingfoot is solid for two old friends reuniting. It is a different sense in comparison to Susan Storm. Her time has a tense aura knowing who else is involved. Events speed up once a classic rogue attacks. It ushers in a perceived shock to respond via half page. Readers see as this is handled rather easily. This allows the back-to-back splashed of one members plans to take center stage. It is perfect in how to handle the moment. The finl page is upstaged by how good the art is here. Never the less, it ends on a solid note with more questions raised as to what the future holds.

FINAL GRADE: 9

A call to action from Galactus causes a look at how the team deals with a void in their absence. North’s writing reminds readers of why this team has earned the reputation it has. Ramos and the art team deliver on dramatic moments and huge action. Marvel’s first family doesn’t miss hitting high marks with this run.
