Cecilia Slaughter knows what this means for the Order of St. George. She has arranged a meeting to decide on finding a successor. Plans become derailed with news breaking of a monster slaying hitting the media.

Maxine Slaughter is on assignment to stay with the dying leader.

While at his bedside, she hears something that shatters her world. “Erica Slaughter is Alive”.

Brombal showcases Cecilia’s fight for power with a sharp edge to it. Her cautious dance around topics plays out in a productive manner. Her words are carefully placed to show unshaking confidence. This is quickly thwarted as the media catches wind of the slayings. Readers watch as the mood gets very frantic. It unlocks a total collapse as the House is expecting more guests. The sense of dread creeps into the panels as they shift over to the Maxine portion.

The interactions with the Old Dragon leaves many questions in the air. Brombal keeps readers guessing as the Dragon toys with the young hunter. The story of Samuel Slaughter eludes to something more greater. This balances out their dialogue with a return to the initial shock. How the monster situation is cleaned with the media is a nice twist into the Order’s reach. Brombal follows this up with more parties weighing in on replacement voting. The mood gets even more tense as the ending begins. Cecilia’s power play turns more problematic as a change of gears crashes everything. It leads to a strong parting point with much danger looming in the air.

Turtulici and Napolitano open with Cecilia’s panicked look in front of the other House leaders. The full page gives way to the frantic two page spread of attempting to cover tracks. This ultimately fails as news breaks about the incident. Events cause an uproar of blame as the finger pointing begins. Napolitano’s coloring takes the reaction panels even higher. The true fear of repercussions is very evident as reality sinks in to Cecilia.

Maxine’s time with the Old Dragons covers many phases. Her eyes show the huge shock at his words. Their banter hits with a devious nature. His erratic nature spins a few stories. Judging by Maxine’s responses, sifting through the true meaning become a challenge. A series of two page spread walks readers into the quiet moments of the dragon’s health. It is interrupted by the attempts to curve the media outbreak of the slayings. Readers can sense the anxiousness of covering this moment up. It circles back to more guests arriving for the vote. Panels carry a different weight here. Its’ amplified in Cecilia’s closing act. A horrifying final page slams the door on events for now with more dangers in the near distance.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

Cecilia’s power play falls short as rumors of Erica’s survival takes charge! Brombal compiles the drama to a breaking point. Turtulici and Napolitano craft a sense of paranoia as the secrets begin to creep out. The House’s future continues to lock in readers for the long haul.
