STORY OVERVIEW:
Captain John, in a final act of defiance against Paimon, sends a message to the last two surviving crew members to destroy the Event Horizon to prevent Paimon from getting to Earth. The hopes of the ship and Earth are on the shoulders of Jen & Sara. The two of them have gone through their own nightmare on the ship but now will have to face the full force of Paimon’s evil power. Can they overcome the physical and mental torture that awaits them or will the ship and Earth be doomed for a new nightmare?
WRITING:
This final issue of the arc does a great job of tying up loose ends, well teasing what may be to come. Christian Ward does a phenomenal job of continuing the nightmarish horrors we’ve become accustomed to in this series. Even in the finale of the arc Ward delivers twists and turns to throw the reader off. The only thing that gives me pause in this issue is it seems that there is too much going on at times. With the stakes being as high as they are, there gets to be too much going on that distracts the reader from the main focus at times.
A major plus for this issue is the epilogue that ends the book. This teases a new story/series to follow and really hypes up the reader for it. To come off a successful run and be able to switch gears and excite readers for what’s to come is a real feather in the cap to Ward. I for one will be waiting for this next installment.
ARTWORK:
The artwork featured in this issue demonstrates a compelling interpretation of horror elements. Tristan Jones consistently delivers visuals that are intense and evocative, skillfully depicting scenes with graphic detail that contribute to a powerful atmosphere. Each panel is carefully crafted to heighten the sense of unease throughout the narrative. The coloring by Pip Martin effectively enhances the overall mood, utilizing dark tones to convey a sense of despair and bold reds to highlight key visual moments. Collectively, their artistic collaboration ensures the horror is communicated in both a memorable and impactful manner to the audience.

Final Thoughts:
Event Horizon: Dark Descent #5 is a fine end to this awesome horror series. To be honest it does leave a little bit on the table, which is slightly disappointing, but gets redeemed a bit in the epilogue with a promise of a new series/arc to come. The artwork has been consistent nightmare fuel throughout this whole series and delivers in this issue as well. If you have been following this series, the end of this arc is satisfying, and the promise of the future is even more awesome. If you have not been reading this, and you like horror, make sure to grab this when the TPB hits the shelves.
