END OF LIFE #6 by Kyle Starks, Steve Pugh, Chris O'Halloran, & Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Starks delivers another incredible read with this latest installment. Eddie’s been thrown out of his dad’s house. Rooming with Trent and Leona provides a hysterical clash of lifestyles and commentary. This segways to Smiley behind bars. Readers watch as the introduction of Neils comes off as insane as every other hitman brought in thus far. Their talk is off the charts, fitting for such a loose cannon like Smiley.

The story does dip into more serious tones at points. Sophie’s chat with Eddie is more grounded than most. The writing shows their challenging past while giving fleeting hope for the present. Of course, with everything in Eddie’s life, nothing is easy. The same can be said for the Menagerie. Readers watch as the heads of branches clash over losses and recouping. It’s a great break before heading to close. Once here, Starks pushes more buttons with Eddie as things go from bad to worse. The final page is vintage EoL at this stage and that’s never a bad thing.

Pugh & O'Halloran capture the awkwardness of Eddie and Trent’s living arrangement perfectly. The full page proclamation sets the tone as Eddie breaks down events. Once events swing to Smiley behind bars, the wild conversation with Neils jumps off the pages. The latest hitman’s mannerisms steal scenes as to how unhinged he is. This leads into Smiley’s frustrations boiling as events shift back to Pluto.

The Menagerie scenes also carry their own set of issues. Panels break down their business activities while challenging status inside the organization. I might be looking too far into something but there might be a great AEW easter egg with one of the characters. Sophie’s time in the book is more innocent than everyone else. The flashback sequence shows the young heartache of Eddie’s leaving. It sparks old emotions moving to close. A near full page image swings events into an all new path. This leads to more debauchery as the closing pages elude to more bad thing on the way for Eddie to handle.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

Eddie’s troubles strike a personal nerve as a rekindled love is detoured. Starks just doesn’t miss with another excellent script. Pugh & O'Halloran deliver on the wild characters that inhabit this story. This series deserves all the hype and praise it gets!
