STORY OVERVIEW:
The power struggle is going down in Latveria and as the combatants all clash at the castle wall, who will take over Doom’s empire? The Americans are represented by Thunderbolt Ross and his troops, of course when they get into danger the Red Hulk emerges. The Latverian resistance is trying to claim what is rightfully theirs, and lastly Hydra never misses an opportunity to seize power. However, as the fight takes them all into the castle grounds, they find themselves in a mysterious dungeon area. We discover that this is no ordinary dungeon and that it houses some weird and horrifying things. What team will be able to make their way through the dungeon and claim the power of Doom?
WRITING:
The first issue does an excellent job of setting the tone and bringing the reader up to speed on what is going on. Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Ben Percy bring the reader into the dark tunnels of the dungeon and do not disappoint with what we will find. They really do a great job of explaining the power struggle and how we end up in the dungeon setting. Teasing what may come as the series goes on but keeping everything wrapped in mystery. The first issue starts a little slow, but the backstory really builds anticipation for what’s to come.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this first issue really sets the tone of the story and brings it to life. The art team does a fantastic job of making the world as dark and bleak as the story needs it to be. The character designs are wonderful and bring humanity to what is going on. But the real star of the art is the scenery and backgrounds which really showcase what the issue and story is truly about.

Final Thoughts:
Dungeons of Doom #1 effectively introduces readers to its setting, providing backstory while retaining an air of mystery about where the plot will go in future issues. The sense of intrigue makes it worthwhile to pick up the first installment at your LCS this week. Still, it's important to note that not much of major significance actually occurs in this debut issue.
FINAL GRADE: 8/10
