DO NOT DISTURB #4 by David Flores, Jarod Hunter Roe‍, Lorenzo Scaramella, & Letter Squids (Invader Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since its’ inception, Flores & Roe have put together a very engaging tale. Halsey’s “loser luck” has found its’ groove while dealing in the Argyle’s uncertainties. After surviving the Belsario family’s hunt, Halsey’s newfound inspiration makes the jump into the real world in a thrilling fashion. Waking in the city morgue casts hope in shadows while he processes the new lease of life. The writing locks in on this stance to slowly start his chase of Edwin before he finds Veronica/Iris.

Before this unfolds, readers get a final look back at “New Years” with Oscar and Iris. Where Moran’s humor is heavily featured, it gives way for a more impactful dose of drama and reflection to take over., Their dialogue is frank as both come to a cold realization. There’s still a couple of quick punchlines thrown in, but it never steals the moment. Once the story snaps back to the living, the pacing speeds up for the inevitable showdown. Flores & Roe see Halsey dig deep into his soul to find inner strength. it is clear the journey has impacted the broken PI in a positive light. This distracts the audience for a nice surprise in the confrontation. The result is an excellent finish with strong epilogue. Key loose ends get a fitting farewell as the final page cements a new beginning for one in desperate need of a win.

Flores & Scaramella kick off the finale with Halsey’s awakening in the morgue. The anxiousness of the panels mirror his direct intentions of finding Veronica. Readers get caught up in the parallel scenes of Edwin and Halsey racing to get to the initial victim of this case. When one arrives moments before the other, the story shifts back to the Argyle party. Iris’ chat with Oscar conveys the impact Halsey made in his brief time. Both wear the sadness of his departure knowing what it meant. This helps push events to the confrontation all have been waiting for.

Halsey’s stand-off with Edwin is fueled by rage. The close-up on his eyes sets the tone for their fight. As events play out, Halsey’s face never steers away from stopping Edwin. This comes to a shocking halt with some fast panels. Readers watch as new surprises come into play moving events towards a superb finish. The full page realization of what just happened sends events into a complete spiral. It allows for a few emotionally driven panels to take hold. This helps construct the parting stage before the epilogue. Knowing one’s fate is sealed in this fashion will bring the fans to a huge smile. The closing pages give a pair of friends one last moment before stating a new path of discovery. Solid work with the art & images here.

FINAL GRADE: 9.3

Halsey is given a second chance, but is it over before it begins?. Flores & Roe lean heavy into Halsey’s redemption attempts with an excellent script. The art weaves the overwhelming drama with the self-discovery of hope. A magnificent look at daring the impossible while finding oneself on the journey.
