STORY OVERVIEW:

It’s a cold November day in 1935, in the former mining town of Hailstone, Montana. Dr. Beacon is working at his dental practice, installing some gold teeth for Leopold Auberon, the richest man in all of Hailstone. When he’s finished putting the teeth in, Auberon tells the Doc of a fantastic story about how his luck turned. Feeling inspired by the conversation, Beacon seems to be uplifted on his way home. Unfortunately for him he gets grabbed by a gang of men who want to rob Auberon and invite Beacon to join. After hearing about the bad ways of Auberon, Beacon decides to join up. However, this choice will send his life into a spiral.

WRITING:

This first issue of the story really gives the reader a peak into the affairs of this small town, well still leaving a great deal to mystery. Rafael Scavone does a very good job of introducing the reader to the town of Hailstone and some of its inhabitants. The mysterious way that Scavone depicts Leopold Auberon really builds some healthy intrigue into who and what he is. Well at the opposite end of the spectrum, the troubled yet conflicted nature of our protagonist Dr. Beacon has you on the fence of wither or not you should be rooting for him. The gang of conspirators is also portrayed in a vague way to help and build even more intrigue and mystery.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this book is great and really gives the feel of the 1930’s. Eduardo Ferigato does an impeccable job with creating this world in its proper time period. The character designs and backgrounds have an amazing antique feel to them, which really immerses the reader into the world. At the same time Ferigato does an awesome job with the color pallet which matches the period piece vibe perfectly.

Final Thoughts:

Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #1 is a good and vague first issue in this limited series. Introducing the reader to the cast of characters, well not overplaying the hand they are dealing us, makes for an enjoyable reading experience. The book does a very good job of setting the table for where we will be going to in this series. This is a worthwhile book to check out today on Comixology and furthermore make sure you set up alerts, so you are notified when the next issue drops.

FINAL GRADE: 8.4/10
