Taylor presents a clash of personalities with great success as the initial encounter unfolds. Lobo’s brashness is handled with calm timing. The writing stages their first fight with a solid build, playing into Batman’s strengths. Once the cause of the conflict is established, it opens the door to walk into Lobo’s more comfortable playing field with huge results. As they arrive to planet Durgham, the mood shifts to a tense feel. Searching for clues highlights the vastly different methods of pressuring witnesses. With a lead in place, the story finds its’ legs with a great homage to the past.
Readers see how a very familiar item unlocks a state inside Batman. Watching Bruce Wayne experience happiness shows a steady tide of emotions. It capitalizes on his greatest ambitions and dreams. Taylor implements many classic Bat moments while weaving a new thread in the timeline. The happiness proves too strong with cracks forming in the foundation. This leads into a somber resolution before pushing to the closing arc. In this stage, events come to a fitting conclusion with a sound place of exit to leave with. A nice homage to a classic tale with a spin all its’ own.

Scott and Kwok open with a subtle view of Wayne Manor. Lobo’s entrance gets a strong two page spread. The following action doesn’t miss as Batman knows this won’t be an easy fix. Panels show the situation approaching some vicious levels. This gives way to a more still place as the talking commences. The art locks in on Lobo’s evolving mannerisms. It helps to move events to the next story phase. Their ride in space is given a peaceful half panel vision before the drama ramps back up.
Their time on Durgham begins with a full page view of the inhabitants. Their interrogation styles come into focus as the investigation begins. Readers see these visions escalate to a strong transition point. The “flashback” moments unlock the true desires of Wayne’s mind. Panels show the yearning for what’s lost as the foundation starts to give way. A half panel proves to be the turning point with another voice coming into the scene. This moves events into a straight-forward finish, opting a great half panel exit for Batman. Paired with an enjoyable final page and the art seals the deal on this homage sequence of events.
“Pyg Pen” sees Wielgosz, Mariscal, & Careypresent a tale of Professor Pyg impacting a neighborhood. The writing dives into the residents sense of good while balancing the legend of Batman. Panels convey a fearful tone as the residents see Pyg’s horrors come to life. It gives readers a glimpse at Batman’s unique relationship with his city to a spectacular close. The ending is sound for what transpires here.

An homage to the past provides a great clash of personalities with Batman and Lobo teaming up ! Taylor plays up to the strong personalities and deeper emotions. Scott and Kwok flood the panels with a personal look at a world than never came. A great detour from the current chaos of Gotham City.
