WRITING:

Taylor ties in the emotional bridge between the Freezes to guide readers into the sunrise of Gotham. Starting with a brief flashback of their origins, the writing shows how far they have fallen in their lives. Seeing the pair bicker while time runs out makes for a strong story component. It adds so much support to the basic fight for survival. This theme only grows larger as the trek to hope begins.

Readers follow as the Freezes try comprehending Batman’s attempts to save innocents along the way. This gets amplified even more with one slowly getting caught off guard with emotion. It’s a fun trick Taylor adds in while they progress to the eventual destination. Along the way, there’s some solid action. Where the story shines is the final act. Getting through the adversity leaves the unlikely trio in a state of calm. The closing panel is a fun nod to tie everything together before the huge finale in Sunrise. A solid complementary piece to the overall picture.

ART & LETTERING:

Henry and Estouco begin with a superb nine grid flashback. Seeing the origins of the Freezes in this manner helps to show the mistrust plaguing them in current times. Niora’s face-off with Batman shows actual anger as she processes Victor’s helmet cracked. This begins an excellent trek into the wild side of Gotham. Panels never shy away from these dangers, esp. in one certain case.

Batman’s attempt to free an endangered child forces the Freezes to respond. This is gifted great action panels while one small gesture cracks one cold figure. Henry’s use of plants as panel boarders works to show the difficulty in their travels. A monstrous full shot shows one enemy waiting for them to attack. This spirals into more fast action. Abbott’s lettering brings the horror out in these moments. This leads into a magnificent two page spread showing the final destination’s impact. Readers are given one more parting shot to remember on the final page as some memories can’t be kept frozen.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Batman forms an uneasy alliance with the Freezes to save Gotham in this “Bad Seeds” tie-in! Taylor adds a few layers into the dangerous trek for hope. Henry and Estouco deliver on huge moments while keeping events very grounded between an unhappy couple. A great lead-in for where “Bad Seeds” is going to finish.
