What is time to someone who’s not afraid of it?

A deadly virus has been unleashed on Gotham City. Being one of the infected, Batman is trying to fight the plague on multiple levels. One factor with this virus is it takes victims’ fear away. Batman has always been a force on his own. Taking away the one element that keeps him in check is deadly.

This is all part of The Lion’s plan.

Let’s take a closer look at how all this plays out.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1105 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, Wayne Faucher, Norm Rapmund and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor welcomes readers to the Lion’s den with a detailed look at his troubled beginnings. It is a hard hitting moment seeing a young child being exposed to the crime life aftermath. Mixing in the genius factor to Bruce Wayne’s philanthropy is a brilliant move. Readers see how the hero worship forms and mutual ground is met. The dialogue here exposes Wayne’s caring nature when dealing with criminal families. Having hope to steer kids on the right path is a noble jester. In this case, it may lead to his demise.

Readers see how other DCU greats are added into this origin. The writing shows Leo as a young adult who can never truly conquer his fears. In this case, it is what the Batman did in front of him as a kid. Having these ramifications linger makes the Lion all that more complex. Batman’s race against time serves its’ purpose. The writing sneaks in a few great lines with the eclectic cast trying to make a cure. This leads to an excellent finish. Batman’s talk with the Lion reveals more than bargained for. The great detective was outsmarted?! You’ll have to see this ending to believe it. Fantastic finishing moment to close with.

Janin starts the Lion’s origin with a deep look into the day the Bat came into his life. Readers watch as the kid is overwhelmed with fear. His actions reflect his uncertainty & how he lashes out. Seeing the terror in his eyes cements this segment’s effect. This trickles down to his encounter with Bruce Wayne. The art mirrors the admiration to Wayne. It is returned with an optimism that only Wayne can give. A transition piece is thrown into play that gives a terrifying look at the virus’ effect in real time. It leaves its’ mark before returning to the past.

The moments at the Boxing gym serves to peel another layer of the Lion away. Janin does a great job of building up the confidence only to take it away. Events snap back to the present form here with a more superhero flare. The wide shot of the lab crew is a who’s who of DCU brain power. Their conversations present many different looks. All the while, Batman is walking around in his armored suit, trying to figure out his own plans. The finish is epic in presentation. Lion’s snarky grin as his plans reveal themselves is dastardly. This builds up to a shocking final page. A full image of damage done sends readers away in disbelief. Incredible job.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The Lion’s evolution from scared boy to fearless foe comes to life in an incredible issue. Taylor pens an epic and tragic look at the latest rogue’s beginnings. Janin’s art constructs the tormented start of terror with superb imagery. This run of Detective Comics has been nothing short of amazing. You can’t afford to miss what’s happening here.
