DEATHSTROKE: THE TERMINATOR #5 by Tony Fleecs, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascencia, & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Fleecs delivers an epic conclusion to Slade’s first arc. Having Adeline shoot Rose point blank sends a message early to readers. Slade’s only weak spot has been family. The writing shows this action push him over the edge and to hell with consequences. Slade spins his anger into focused attacks. The banter with Deathblow and Deadshot is as business as it gets. This allows the more personal wounds to become exposed as the ex’s duel to the death.

The writing showcases Slade’s true emotions in a great narration piece. Adeline’s convictions of pure torment shine in this sequence. There is nothing but pure hate involved with what she’s doing. It mirrors the losses caused by Slade. The dialogue is sharp with every word said. Readers can sense the pent-up rage screaming with every statement made by Adeline. This compliments the insane action taking place while they talk. Events conclude on a definitive point before moving into a somber epilogue. Fleecs does an excellent trick with the narration leading into a great closing point for this chapter of Slade’s life.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Di Giandomenico & Plascencia excel in bringing Adeline’s personal attack to the forefront. The first page of Rose being shot nails the emotional impact it sets for. Slade’s anger cannot be held in check as he’s ready to scorch Earth. One panel in particular jumps out. while small, a close-up of Slade shedding a tear makes a loud statement. Adeline’s body language shows how she is relishing in the personal torment. Little does she realize what she’s truly awaken.

A powerful two page splash shows Slade finally releasing his anger. It is a wild scenario heightened by the lettering. The dead stare close-ups only show the pain inflicted on his soul. This moves into more phenomenal action. Another bold two page spread welcomes the final round. This formula extends throughout the remainder of the issue. The personal bout ends with an explosive half panel. Once in the epilogue, the mood becomes much more calm. The final panel drops the mic on a most impressive chapter.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4

Slade vs. Deathstroke in one of the most personal battles you will ever witness will have readers talking! Fleecs delivers an emotional shot into a cold killer’s heart . Di Giandomenico & Plascencia bring out a new side of Slade in-between the stellar action. No one walks away from this battle unchanged!
