CYCLOPS #1 (MARVEL COMICS)

Cyclops is heading out on his own but should you head off to the comic shop and find out? There’s only one way to find out!

I’m your boy Joey from the So Wizard Podcast on behalf of Fanlight Zone. This is another comic book review.

We’re looking at Cyclops #1 By Alex Paknadel, Rogê Antônio, Fernando Sifuentes & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics).

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Cyclops finds himself drawn into the machinations of his past. Hijinx Ensue when an enemy from the past reappears with some new adversaries to make things a mess. This leaves him stranded, alone in the jungle. He’s also without his ruby quartz visor.

What did we think?

I liked this. I liked this quite a bit actually. I’m a huge fan of taking and I don’t want to say Cyclops is a “B” Character but he’s not someone who’s had a long ongoing series. This isn’t Spider-Man where we have 15 ongoings a month. This is a character who I think maybe had a run on “Marvel Comics Presents” back in the day? I’m aging myself (great ROB LIEFLED cover in that run too), but he’s never really gotten a solo spotlight to shine in.

MORE FROM THE X-MEN!

Now we get a chance to see what he can do with this one. I really liked the art. It has a very cool story with what’s happening. Cyclops is called off on his own from something from his past. He runs into a classic X-villain squad. More hijinx ensuing with his famed visor gone. He can’t see. What can he do?

I love the set-up for a really cool adventure. What I’m missing is the set-up for an ongoing series. This doesn’t feel like that & I’m not sure how you do that because of his X-ties. It’s not like he can just leave like Captain America does the Avengers. There isn’t anything established for Cyclops outside the X-Men. It seems like something to pull him away for so long but come right back. My fear is this is setting us up for another 10 issue “not” limited series and we’re done. That said, I would LOVE to see this continue.

FINAL GRADE: 7/10

Great story, Cool art. I like it but have some reservations. Prove me wrong and keep this going! I want more cool adventures with a great character that has sadly been overlooked in the past.

Let me know your thoughts on Cyclops #1 in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
