The Synders wrap events up with a healthy dose of climbing excitement in this final round. Charlie’s early days have been a focal point over recent issues. Opening with a quick reminder of this aspect sets forth the frantic race to Crystal City. Once there, the writing exposes flaws in the City’s counsel. Their belief that their walls can keep danger away proves incorrect as Charon launches his invasion of the gates.
His demeanor is nothing but confident as the attack commences. It is upended by the eventual confrontation. Once here, the story enters a more traditional phase as the face-off commences. There is a small break form this theme in the form of Juniper and Charlie’s plea to the council. Readers watch as the emotions start flowing in Charlie’s impactful speech. It ushers in a very strong finale. The Snyders throw in a great twist which begins a steady domino effect. This leads into a fitting finish for a story based off never giving up hope. Readers should have plenty to enjoy with this story.

Favoccia and Cogar open with a brief flashback of Charlie’s past. This adds more gravity to the full page image of the kids racing to get to Crystal City. The tense atmosphere is inescapable as the race is on. This leads to a more serious tone as the council discusses events. Readers watch as it’s interrupted by a fantastic two page spread of Charon arriving at the gates. It ignites a vicious attack on the city with no surrender in mind.
Once jo’s group arrives at the scene, the mood becomes all business as all know what is at stake. The look of determination never leaves Jo as he presses forward. This mood lends itself to Juniper and Charlie. Panels show the unbreakable stance taken with no give in the foundation. Readers watch as events take a stunning turn heading into the close. A shocking action lights a great match waiting to explode. One character’s acceptance of fate cements the changing of the story. It leads to another excellent two page splash. There are plenty of bittersweet moments during this sequence, leading to a perfect closing panel. What a visual ride this series has been!

The final showdown between Jo’s group and Charon leads to a thrilling finish for this exceptional fantasy story. The Snyders weave a storm of emotional fronts flawlessly to close. Favoccia and Cogar construct a vibrant final stand as the series sails into the abyss. An absolutely incredible voyage to be a part of. Don’t miss it.
