*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Events open with more flashbacks to Charlie’s past. The writing teases the false hope as her father is poised to become a savoir to the Shroud problem. Once events snap back to the current arc, the mood is more tense. Knowing that Swann is looking to stop their movement, Charlie rallies the troops for potential combat. This all gets pushed aside for the most compelling portion of the book. Juniper’s discussion with Ren unlocks a past no one will see coming.

Readers watch as everything they know about Charon is changed forever. His story takes a noble deed that becomes punished. It is a true skill the Synders put on display making him an empathetic rogue. The writing nails the impact of this as Ren’s fear comes to the forefront. It is shadowed by pent-up rage that is unleashed. Juniper’ valiant efforts to diffuse the situation fail before moving events to a more action-oriented stage. All roads collide with stakes rising higher with each move. The use of the flashbacks only strengthen Ren’s attack with Charon unfazed by the others around him. It leads to a solid finishing level. The final page catapults all players into a destiny that’s undeniable.

Favoccia and Cogar open with a patient look into the past. Charlie’s growing concerns take over panels as they segway to the current time. Her moment talking with the “Heretics” leaves on a positive note before another storm rolls in. Once events move to Ren’s retelling of Charon’s initial moments, the pages flood with emotions. The art exposes his good nature before fate steals it from his hands. This leads into a few bold panels that hide nothing. This portion is nothing short of tragic and work to elevate the dynamic figure.

Once back in present, a phenomenal two page splash kickstarts some action. Cogar’s coloring maximizes events, allowing Charon and Ren to impact. The panels move events along at a fast pace. They create an unlikely parallel with Charlie and Ren. Both characters suffer huge losses from events. Their expressions split in ranges but exposes their hidden truths. These make a strong pivoting spot to the closing pages. Once here, the mood lowers its weight as Charlie’s group processes what happened and what happens now. The full final page teases a light in the darkness. Will it burn out before they get there? It’s a great question to ponder until next time.

FINAL GRADE: 9

The tragic past of Charon and Ren steal the show on an excellent chapter of this fantasy tale. The Snyders unload on the heart-breaking origins of Ren and Charon. Favoccia and Cogar construct magical moments that leave quite the impression. This is a fantasy series that readers simply can’t afford to miss!
