STORY OVERVIEW:

Adela is an investigative journalist who will go the extra mile to get a story. For six months she has been trying to infiltrate a Gen-Z Neo Nazi Punk Odinist group. After finally earning their trust, she discovers that they are planning on making a spiritual trip to the remote ice-covered forests of Norway to try and summon Odin. As Adela and the other 8 people make their way to the remote destination we learn a lot about the group. Once they arrive though, nothing can prepare them for what is about to go down in these ancient woods.

WRITING:

This first issue gives the reader the back story that we need well also preparing us for how crazy this story and series will get. Marguerite Bennett & James Tynion IV weave an insane and trippy opening to this series that will mesmerize readers and leave them wanting more. This story takes you on a psychedelic ride that keeps you guessing what will happen next, well keeping you off balance for the duration of the issue. Bennett & Tynion also don’t stray away from any taboos as the story is full of all sorts of uncomfortable taboos. This may trigger and make some readers too uncomfortable, but others will view this as one of the stories’ strongest features. This is truly a unique horror tale that will really get fans of the genre talking and excited for more.

ARTWORK:

The artwork in this first issue is eerily beautiful and is as unnerving as the story is. Letizia Cadonici makes the art as trippy and creepy as the story is. This has a creepy beauty to it and really brings more out of the story. As the group goes deeper down the rabbit hole, the artwork becomes more psychedelic and trippier. Cadonici’s artwork is fantastic and will draw readers in for sure.

As good as the artwork is, the color choices by Jordie Bellaire really make it pop. The color choices match the mood and tone perfectly. They draw the readers’ eye to each and every panel and make every detail of the artwork stand out. Meanwhile, Tom Napolitano’s lettering makes it easier for the reader to follow the mood of the story well, making it easy for the reader to follow. All together the art team really shines in this opening issue and will surely deliver for the entire series.

Final Thoughts:

Odin #1 is a trippy thrill ride that delivers some great horror, and this is just issue one! There are no taboos that are out of bounds and no lines that won’t be crossed. The artwork is hauntingly beautiful and captures the essence of the story perfectly. Make sure to get down to your Local Comic Shop or your preferred online store before Monday April 27th and order your copy, as you will want to ensure you have a copy when this book drops on May 20th.
