The writing instantly crafts a sense of mistrust that lingers in this issue. Opening with another flashback to Charlie’s dad & hi research teases more of the Shroud truth. This spins into the present discovery of a working radio. Readers watch as the mood brings its intensity as the kids grill the Doctor for the truth. The situation revolves itself momentarily as cooler heads prevail. With this drama brewing, another storyline steals the attention from the main plot.

There has been much curiosity concerning Charon. Having Juniper become the audience POV helps to walk through his unique beginnings. There is much need clarity which will change some opinions of the main antagonist Providing this tragic background only adds more strength to his actions. Even when the story flips back to present Charlie, it never seems to recapture the steam from Charon’s time. The writing speeds events into the closing chapter. There is some predictability in where this heads, but enough surprise to keep readers guessing what’s next.

Favoccia and Cogar shows of a more optimistic time with Charlie’s flashback. The panels are bright, teasing doomed youthful hope. Once back to the main timeline, tempers are extremely flaring. Hiding such a valuable artifact draws out the emotions from all involved. Even with its subtle diffusion, the reactions linger as the next plot point takes hold. Once this unfold, the issue makes a huge statement.

Ren’s confrontation with Juniper spins into an unwrapping of truth. Charon’s origin comes with a sympathetic feel. Readers watch as Charon’s work is cast aside. They can feel his soul being crushed. It’s a powerful moment that ends with an almost sad look form Ren. Knowing how vicious this character has been, it is a shocking point. This transitions into the final run into finish. There is a great action shot of the kids fighting back against their attackers. This leads into Favoccia unleashing some more imagination into the creatures of this world. Readers see how the kids plans go south very fast. It leads to a solid panel landing spot for where events go next.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Charlie’s discovery leads into a question of truth as more mysteries are unlocked in this fantastic series. The Snyders build up the uneasy tension with their writing. Favoccia and Cogar craft strong art with much emotion behind each panel. This series proves time in and time out why this should be in your collection.
